Top Marx - NMIT apprentice chef wins trip to Paris
Congratulations to our recent Certificate III in Hospitality (Commercial Cookery) graduate Beth Candy, who has been awarded a Thierry Marx Career Development award! Beth has won a month’s work experience with Michelin Starred chef Thierry Marx at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Paris, return airfares to France, one month’s accommodation, and $1,500 spending money.
Student Suzanne Waghorn awarded Whittlesea Community AwardCongratulations to Suzanne Waghorn, who has been awarded the Whittlesea Community Connections International Women’s Day Award for Personal Achievement. Suzanne, despite losing her vision to diabetes 11 years ago, completed a Certificate IV of Massage Therapy Practice and has gone onto further study at NMIT and volunteer work at Medina Manor.

The feature story prominently details the hands-on practical education and training that NMIT offers to apprentices and students in hospitality and cookery.
Hospitality Management degree students in FinlandNMIT’s Bachelor of Hospitality Management program now has a student exchange agreement in place with the Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki, Finland. This agreement offers local students an exciting opportunity to spend six months in Finland while furthering their studies. The reciprocal agreement will also see Finnish students coming to study at NMIT.
Student’s Belly Dancing Passion Inspires Award-Winning Tour

St Georges Restaurant receives “Award of Excellence”
The Restaurant and Catering Award of Excellence is a national competition which recognises outstanding restaurant and catering operators. NMIT’s St Georges Restaurant was nominated in the “Best Restaurant in Training Institute” category and was one of four finalists in this section for 2011. NMIT cookery apprentices win TAFE Cookery Challenge
First class training and teamwork were the key to success when NMIT cookery apprentices turned a mystery box of ingredients into a gold medal in the Victorian TAFE Cookery Challenge. One of Victoria's most prestigious team events for apprentices, the win represents a significant milestone in the early stages of the Hospitality careers for Team Captain and Rockpool apprentice, Keelan Gallogly and his teammates. They reproduced their winning menu at the last Master Chef dinner held in September.
NMIT wins the Great Bendigo Chop Off
In a bit of TAFE rivalry NMIT Hospitality and Meat processing students have won the Great Chop Off title defeating students from the Bendigo Regional Institute of TAFE (BRIT). Part of the Bendigo Festival of Lamb, the teams were given 35 minutes to turn a hanging lamb carcass from Erindale Farm into a plate of lamb chops. NMIT’s own Master Chef Dinner Series 2011
Throughout 2011, NMIT’s Hospitality and Tourism Department have hosted some of Melbourne’s top chefs during their Master Chef Dinner series. Held at St Georges Restaturant, Preston Campus, these events provide excellent opportunities for NMIT Hospitality Apprentices to gain experience with leading Melbourne Chefs. Tourism & Hospitality Alumni
NMIT Lecturer in Hospitality and Tourism Management, Charles Eller, is conducting research into the career paths of students who have graduated from hospitality and tourism courses. Charles would welcome the opportunity to talk with both local and international students who have completed an Advanced Diploma of either Hospitality or Tourism. Darebin Homemade Beer and Wine Festival
In May, NMIT partnered with the City of Darebin to present the Darebin Homemade Beer and Wine Festival. Our first year students developed skills in a variety of roles over the 2 days of the event.
Two NMIT Cookery teachers also judged the Passata Competition, which was an inclusion for the first time in 2011.
NMIT graduate Omar Ali took a risk leaving Bangladesh to study hospitality in Melbourne. Luckily it paid off. After finishing the Diploma of Hospitality, he went on to study NMIT's Bachelor of Hospitality Management, graduating top of his class after just 18 months. He's now completing a master's degree at Victoria University. Read more about Omar in his success story.
