NMIT is committed to promoting and maintaining an environment where a student who experiences conflict - or is dissatisfied with an NMIT service - can raise their concerns and have them addressed in a responsible and respectful manner.

This page is designed to explain the process for resolving complaints and grievances in a timely and fair manner.

Complaints

A complaint is when a student is dissatisfied with the quality of a service offered by NMIT. An example could be that of a student complaining about the choice of vending machines available on campus. While no doubt irritating, a complaint is not something that has a major and detrimental effect on a student's course of study.

If you have a complaint, you are encouraged to complete an Improvement Suggestion form. Forms are also available from:

  • Campus Libraries
  • Student Services Offices
  • Information Desks
  • Heads of Departments

Once completed, return your Improvement Suggestion form to one of the above contact points.

Grievances

A grievance is a serious problem of an academic / non-academic nature that a student believes seriously disadvantages them in the course of their study at NMIT.

If you have a Grievance

In the first instance:

  • Talk to the person involved - In most cases, grievances can be resolved at this informal level
  • If you are unable to discuss the issue with the person involved or this does not resolve the issue, you should discuss the situation with a teacher or counsellor

Formal written grievances can be lodged with your Head of Department / Senior Lecturer / Manager.

Supports Available

Teaching staff can provide information about the Student Grievance Policy and Procedure.

Counsellors can offer confidential emotional support to students involved in a grievance process.

You can have the support of a third party (friend / advocate) accompany you to any grievance meetings.

Confidentiality

All parties are entitled to confidentiality in a grievance process.

It is important that you do not name the person you have a grievance against publicly.
