NMIT understands the transition to study in a new country can be a challenging experience. To help International Students settle into their new environment we are running a FREE student support mentor program. This program links established students who have been studying at NMIT in Australia for more than a year with International Students who are just starting out.

What is a Mentor?

A mentor provides support and guidance to another person (a mentee). A mentor and mentee usually have one-to-one (or small group) relationships, that provide an opportunity for all to share and learn from experiences, share knowledge and develop friendships. NMIT Mentors will assist mentees to develop confidence, understand how to access support and services and provide tips for studying at NMIT and living in Australia.

Benefits for Mentors:

  • Be a positive role model
  • Receive training & support
  • Receive a written reference from NMIT
  • Enhance your CV
  • Develop cross cultural communication skills

Benefits for Mentees:

  • Receive support
  • Learn how to access transport, banking, migration, health, safety & recreation services
  • Learn about where to go & who to talk to at NMIT
  • Develop friends & networks
  • There is no cost

How are Mentors chosen?

Any NMIT student who has been living in Australia for 12 months or longer can apply to become a mentor. We select mentors on the basis of an application form, a CV, successful completion of the training program and an interview. All mentors must have strong interpersonal & communication skills, a positive outlook on life, a desire to help others and a willingness to learn.

How are Mentees chosen?

Any new International Student studying in their first semester at NMIT can become involved.

How much time does it involve?

Mentors and mentees meet for one hour every fortnight.
