What is Hospitality Management - Higher Education?
Hospitality Management - Higher Education focuses on the knowledge and skills required to manage hotels, motels, restaurants, convention facilities and events in a range of business environments. Hospitality Management - Higher Education includes discipline areas of food and beverage management, accommodation management, front office operations, quality service management, costing and control, financial analysis and marketing. The course also includes the emerging event management industry.
Hospitality Management - Higher Education subjects are underpinned by contemporary business management theory and practice, including small to medium enterprise business planning and entrepreneurship, strategic management, facility and services management, sales and marketing management, economics and project management.
Why study Hospitality Management - Higher Education at NMIT?
NMIT has offered extensive hospitality training since 1992 and the institute has identified the need for professional hospitality and event management training.
NMIT's Bachelor of Hospitality Management provides an academic program with extensive content and theory for ‘real-world’ industry projects, involving key staff from the hospitality industry. The course includes industry visits, industry speakers and visits to government and industry research sites to enable students to understand the close relationship between theory and practice
NMIT Hospitality Management - Higher Education students complete two industry placements (first & second year) with a commercial enterprise to enhance knowledge and skills. The course also includes the development and management of actual events and projects for students to obtain direct, hands-on experience.
As well as industry experience NMIT has its own commercial-standard facilities and a commercial restaurant and bistro. Students have the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills at NMIT’s restaurant and bistros, bars and wine-tasting laboratory. This practical experience is applied to all levels within the degree program.
What is the cost of studying Higher Education at NMIT?
Students can enrol in NMIT's bachelor courses for three year's full-time, or have the option of enrolling part-time. The degree programs are fee for service and costs A$12,000 a year, however all courses have the option of FEE-HELP for eligible students. No additional fees are charged beyond the tuition fees for the compulsory components of any higher education courses.
The tuition fees are calculated based on full-time study. Part-time fees per year depend on subjects chosen (part-time study is only available to domestic students).

The hospitality industry continues to be a growing area and is worth more than $58 billion annually to the Australian economy. Event management is an emerging industry. Specialist event management companies, government agencies, local councils, community associations and industry associations are involved in the planning, implementation and evaluation of events. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics the event business is estimated to be worth more than $655 million each year.
The career opportunities for graduates are as varied as the industry. Graduates can enter management and supervisory positions with hotels, motels and the restaurant industry, including front- line management such as food and beverage supervisor, function supervisor, front office supervisor, sales & marketing, financial management and control. Graduates can also specialise their careers by entering event management or winery positoins.
