Visa Requirements
Students applying to study a vocational course (Advanced Diploma, Diploma or Certificate) must apply for a a student visa subclass 572.
Students applying to study a degree course (either as a single course of study or packaged with a diploma course) must apply for a student visa subclass 573.
Students applying to study an ELICOS course only will be given student visa - subclass 570.
Major Visa Requirements
- You are required to make Satisfactory Academic Progress in each semester of your studies. NMIT Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (PDF) is available to all students.
- You are allowed to work for up to 20 hours per week and the work must not interfere with your studies. There are no limitations to work during recognized holiday periods.
- The International Office is to be immediately informed of any change of address during the duration of your studies.
- If your country is classified at Assessment Level 3 or 4 and your study intentions in Australia are for 10 months or less you will be subject to a "no further stay condition". This means you must leave Australia before you student visa expires. If you want to do further study, you must leave Australia before your student visa expires. If you want to do further study, you must leave Australia and apply for a new student visa offshore.
- You must remain with the education provider (NMIT) with whom you enrolled for the first 6 months of your principal course (or if the course is less than 6 months for the duration of the course). If you undertake a pre requisite course (eg. ELICOS), you must remain with the original provider for the duration of the pre requisite course as well as the first 6 months of the principal course. In limited circumstances students maybe able to apply for a Release (PDF) from NMIT before studying 6 months of their principal course.
- If you change educational provider (i.e. leave NMIT) you must inform us of your new provider.
- Before you come to Australia you must pay OSHC for the duration of your course. This is a requirement of a student visa. All international students are required to take out health insurance before being issued with a visa. Your Overseas Health Cover (OSHC) must always be current throughout the duration of your study in Australia.
- If you are absent for more than 3 consecutive days you must contact the teaching department and the International Office
Academic Requirements
Generally speaking students are required to have completed Australian Year 12 or the recognised equivalent in their home contry to be eligible for entry into an NMIT course.
Some courses have additional requirements. Refer to the Courses section of this website for specific details.
English Language Proficiency
All evidence of English language proficiency must have been completed within two years of your application being submitted. Please check course specific English reuirements also as some courses require a higher level than stated below.

Mature Age Entry
Applications who do not meet NMIT's academic entry level may also apply as Mature Age Students. A Mature Age Student is over 18 and has finished school for more than 1 year. Mature Age Entry is dependent upon a satisfactory level of English.Payment of Fees
You must pay before you arrive in Australia. We prefer fees to be paid by cheque, bank draft or money order.
