Suzette Hall studied Bachelor of Equine Studies

NMIT graduate Suzette Hall’s love of horses meant an equine studies degree was the perfect fit. The course’s broad subject range helped her in her choice of career - marketing equine products. Thanks to the program at NMIT, she’s also had the opportunity to travel and study in the US.

Courses: Bachelor of Equine Studies
Department: Equine Studies

Spending time in country Victoria as a child meant NMIT graduate Suzette Hall grew up with a great love of animals, especially horses. “I have always loved animals. I fell in love with horses riding bareback down dry river beds on my mum’s family property. I always believed horses were such soulful animals and there had to be more to them than people believed. If you look in a horse’s eyes you see so much going on.”

When Suzette was in Year 11 she knew she wanted to work with animals but wasn’t keen on being a vet. When her Mum found NMIT’s Bachelor of Equine Studies online, the pieces fell into place. “I wanted a course that was hands-on and that would provide me with the scientific knowledge I needed.” Suzette was offered a place after year 12 and completed the degree last year, after a stint studying in the US. “The most valuable thing was the wide range of subjects we were taught, from marketing to equine behaviour. I think the course offers students the chance to see where they really want to go and tailor their degree to suit.”

When she first started the course, Suzette was interested in a career in breeding, training and breaking, but as she learned more about the industry, she changed her mind. “I have always wanted a family and unfortunately the thoroughbred industry doesn’t really allow for that.” While studying business management in her second year, Suzette developed an interest in marketing and public relations, and decided to switch her focus to marketing horses and equine products. “I want to get a job in a marketing firm and hopefully in the future set up my own business, working for the big horse studs and other properties throughout Australia and maybe even internationally.”

At NMIT, Suzette particularly enjoyed the practical aspects of the course. “The lecturers were great. They were all very passionate about their subjects. The course has given me the confidence in my knowledge and ability to work in so many situations. I’ve also had the opportunity to study in the US which has been unbelievable. I’ve seen and learnt things that I would never have thought possible.”
