inScribe Magazine is a joint production between NMIT’s Bachelor of Writing and Publishing and the Darebin City Council. Originally published under the title Northern Notes, inScribe features articles on art and literary culture, news and events in and around the northern suburbs of Melbourne. The summer and winter editions are distributed across the Darebin region twice yearly and include short stories, essays, poetry, feature articles, profiles, news and reviews. From issue six (winter 2012) the inScribe newspaper evolved into a thirty-two page full colour magazine with an electronic version available in PDF format for eReader programs.
The creation of each issue of inScribe involves a unique collaboration between the Darebin Community Group and the Bachelor of Writing and Publishing’s 3rd year ‘Publishing Studio’ students. Each student is assigned a ‘position’ within the production structure, from editor-in-chief to production manager to distribution coordinator. They then synchronise their role with select members of the Community Group to edit and develop workable content from submissions derived from the Darebin region. All NMIT cohorts will complete a number of tasks including attending meetings and briefs, copy editing, material sourcing, design and layout, prepress production, print supplier liaison, marketing and distribution.
Readers Survey
inScribe has also created an online reader’s survey to help us gauge who is reading the magazine, what are they reading, and where are they reading it. The survey is completely anonymous and the answers will help us continue to develop a magazine that best reflects our readership base.
