The Collaboration Project is designed to bring together the four departments within Performing Arts into a single highly polished and professional product: a music video. Music students compose, arrange and rehearse a piece that is recorded, mixed and mastered by the Sound Production students and then filmed by the Screen and Media students. Students from Music Business are central to the project and liaise with all parties to ensure the entire project runs smoothly and allows the creative process to flourish.
The finished product, a music video, is a testament to the students’ ability and willingness to work together in what can be highly demanding but ultimately hugely rewarding environment that provides them with a quality product and the necessary experience to work in industry at a highly professional and creative level.
The Video Clip, and bonus Channel 31 appearance!
Well, here it is, our finished Video Clip! Phew. What a big project! I’m quite happy with the result too. The simplicity of the set and clothes worked really well, and the little details like the colour of the curtains and the addition of fairy lights, do make a difference. Honestly, how good do boys look in shirts, braces and hats?! …
And finally, shooting the video!
As soon as we finished recording, Georgie and I met with Amiiee (pictured) and Ash, the screen and media students who would be managing our shoot at the Collingwood NMIT campus. Their enthusiasm and creative ideas for our clip really gave us confidence, and we immediately hit it off. As you can kind of see from the picture, the space …
Let me present: our master recording!
For the mega-keen, skip my rant and scroll to the bottom to listen! So, a week following our session in the recording studio, we returned to a different studio upstairs at Fairfield for an afternoon mastering session with Dave and Doug. After some routine prep of the tracks in Protools (to level out dynamics and boost the signal), Dave then expertly …
The Recording Session
Arriving at Fairfield NMIT with plenty of time to spare, we were all super excited. Our first major milestone – the recording session – had finally arrived! We found our sound engineers Dave (pictured) and his humble apprentice Doug (studying sound production) already prepping the recording studio. Uncoiling leads, setting up microphones, connecting cables, flicking switches and generally moving things about …
Practice, practice, practice!
We figured we’d need a fair few rehearsals to get the band familiar with the song so that we’d get the most out of our time in the recording studio. Most importantly, I wanted us to nail our parts so that we wouldnt wind up miming something that looked and felt awkward later in the video! To accompany the demo …
Band Management
Woody Allen has been quoted as saying that 80% of success is just showing up. Watching some of Woody’s movies, I’m not entirely clear on what goes on to make up the other 20%. However, film critique aside, I think you can achieve almost anything if you’re motivated and organised. AND of course turn up… Thankfully the organisers of the …
Recruiting the Odyssey Boys
Whenever I play my song ‘I don’t want to waste a thing’ alone with the uke, I can hear other parts playing along behind me. A jazz band…or an orchestra. Particularly a double bass, maybe a dash of violins, oooh and a brass section! Of course imaginary musicians simply would not do for a live video. I needed a real …
Start with the song…
Ever since I acquired my pretty little uke, a whole bunch of sentimental, gushy, heart-on-sleeve love songs have come rolling on out like a waterfall of sweet pink liquid marshmallow. It couldn’t really be helped. I mean, it’s tough to write a sad song on a ukulele! Eddie Vedder proved melancholy is passable a year or so ago. But the …
A free video clip of my song? I’m in!
Hi, I’m Nelle and I’m studying Music – the Certificate IV in Music Performance at NMIT (Greensborough) – to be precise. I’m really happy to be participating in the Collaboration Project, to record and shoot a clip of one of my own songs! On top of all that, I’ve been asked to blog about it, so I’ll be taking goofy (and …
