The advanced diploma is designed for individuals who wish to continue to pursue or enhance careers in Jewellery. This course continues to concentrate predominantly on a hand working skill base while introducing technological aspects and promoting individual attainment within the industry.

Jewellery hand skill competencies include:

  • Design and create jewellery items using historical techniques
  • Design and develop a series of works for jewellery production
  • Design and implement mechanisms in jewellery production
  • Design and create work for a graduate jewellery project .


Competencies within the theory, design and drawing component include:

  • Produce a professional jewellery design folio
  • Establish and manage a small jewellery business
  • Plan, conduct and supervise a jewellery exhibition .
  • The course culminates in a two week Public Exhibition.

Some Jewellers extend their qualifications by undertaking further study in the areas of gemmology, diamond technology and jewellery valuation.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this course may gain employment in the design and development of jewellery and precious metals production.

Entrance Requirements

Local Students:

Students entering this course must have satisfactorily completed Year 12 or an equivalent. Mature age applicants who do not meet this requirement are encouraged to apply.

International Students:

Australian Year 12 (or recognised equivalent) or relevant work experience. IELTS 5.5 or higher (or recognised equivalents). Mature Age. Upon application, students are required to submit a resume of their interest and experience in the jewellery industry. (A prior knowledge of technical terminology or design would be an advantage).

Various forms of assessment may be used including: Practical exercises, written exercises, studio journal or combinations of the three.

Successful candidates will be required to purchase their own jewellery kit. The minimum requirements are discussed on the student's induction. The Jewellery Section will provide some basic materials - precious metal is not supplied by NMIT. A materials fee applies to all students and is set each year and advertised accordingly. **Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications, which must be provided as evidence of completion.

VET FEE-HELP helps you pay your VET tuition fees

You could be eligible to access a VET FEE-HELP loan to pay your VET tuition fees for a number of NMIT Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas.

You can apply for VET FEE-HELP if you’re a student studying in Australia who is:

  • an Australian citizen or permanent humanitarian visa holder who is resident in Australia for the duration of the unit of study VET FEE-HELP is being applied for;
  • enrolled on or before the census date* of an eligible unit of study through an approved VET provider;
  • meet tax file number requirements;
  • have not exceeded the FEE-HELP limit

VET FEE-HELP allows eligible students to have all or part of their VET tuition fees paid by the Australian Government in the form of a loan**, regardless of whether you are eligible or not for a government funded place under Skills Reform.

Over their lifetime, students can access a VET FEE-HELP loan to pay their VET tuition fees, articulate into university and then add their university costs until the maximum FEE-HELP maximum is reached. There is no age restriction on VET FEE-HELP.
