The course is highly practical and has a focus on studio recording and live sound reinforcement. Throughout the course students' work on a variety of practical projects which are supported by theoretical knowledge. The course makes use of a variety of recording experiences ranging from High Definition Digital studio recording to analog mixing and recording of live bands. A wide selection of microphones and audio mixers are used, students gain considerable experience editing using Protools.

Local students applying through VTAC must also complete a General supplementary application form.

Students completing the Certificate IV or Advanced Diploma who wish to further their skills may be eligible to apply for other TAFE and university courses in recording, sound design and post-production for film and television, theatre, audio/visual technology, radio production and new media.

Graduates of these courses may gain employment in recording studios, concert production and sound design companies.

Entrance Requirements

Local Students:

Pre-requisite Studies: Units 3 and 4 - English Key Selection Criteria: Knowledge of and demonstrated commitment to the audio industry Evidence of existing skills and experience Academic results are important and are considered in the selection process Experienced practitioners may gain direct entry into the Advanced Diploma.

International Students:

Australian Year 12 (or recognised equivalent) or relevant work experience. IELTS 5.5 or higher (or recognised equivalents). Mature Age.

Assessment Methods

Assessment occurs during classroom sessions and practical sessions. The following methods are used: observation of students' performance and actions, questions about the tasks being performed, short verbal tests, written tests, written assignments, analysis of finished sound recordings.

Materials

tudents pay a materials fee which covers the cost of the sound production textbook and consumable media such as tapes and recordable DVDs and CDs. Students wishing to make additional copies or archives of their work may be required to purchase their own blank media. Notepaper, pens and other materials used during classroom tuition must be provided by students.

**Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications, which must be provided as evidence of completion.

VET FEE-HELP helps you pay your VET tuition fees

You could be eligible to access a VET FEE-HELP loan to pay your VET tuition fees for a number of NMIT Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas.

You can apply for VET FEE-HELP if you’re a student studying in Australia who is:

  • an Australian citizen or permanent humanitarian visa holder who is resident in Australia for the duration of the unit of study VET FEE-HELP is being applied for;
  • enrolled on or before the census date* of an eligible unit of study through an approved VET provider;
  • meet tax file number requirements;
  • have not exceeded the FEE-HELP limit

VET FEE-HELP allows eligible students to have all or part of their VET tuition fees paid by the Australian Government in the form of a loan**, regardless of whether you are eligible or not for a government funded place under Skills Reform.

Over their lifetime, students can access a VET FEE-HELP loan to pay their VET tuition fees, articulate into university and then add their university costs until the maximum FEE-HELP maximum is reached. There is no age restriction on VET FEE-HELP.
