The Associate Degree of Early Years Studies is ideal for those that want to work with young children and is an embedded exit point for either the Bachelor of Education (Early Years) or the Bachelor of Early Years Studies.
The two year course:
- provides the skills and industry qualifications to be employed as a qualified educator within children’s services (as registered with the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development – DEECD)
- provides excellent practical skills developed through an integrated program with a mixture of on campus learning and professional placement each week
- provides knowledge on children from birth to 8 years old with a specialisation on infants and toddlers
- covers very contemporary material – there is a strong focus on social justice and equity, covering multiple perspectives and educational spaces
- is a supportive program with a personal approach that recognises students as individuals
- is also available part-time (4 years)

Entrance Requirements
Local Students:
Current and Non-Current VCE applicants: Minimum study score of 25 in one of the VCE units 3 and 4 English group of subjects; demonstrated personal attributes suitable for teaching; capacity to undertake work at degree level as demonstrated through participation in an interveiw and selection process including completion of a written task; Working With Children check (at enrolment).
SPECIAL/ALTERNATIVE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Diploma of Children's Services pathway: Successful completion of the Diploma of Children's Services (Early Childhood Education and Care); demonstrated personal attributes suitable for teaching; capacity to undertake work at a degree level as demonstrated through participation in an interview and selection process including completion of a written task; Working With Children check (at enrolment). Students granted entry to the course via this pathway will have a maximum of 6 credits available to them under the RPL agreement.
Mature Aged applicants (over 21 years): Demonstrated personal attributes suitable for teaching; capacity to undertake work at a degree level as demonstrated through participation in an interview and selection process including completion of a written task; consideration of success at secondary school and any further studies undertaken; Working With Children check (at enrolment).
Bachelor of Early Years Studies or Education (Early Years): Students who successfully complete the associate degree can apply for admission into the bachelor program. Students must show they meet the English and Maths admission requirements of these programs.
International Students:
Applicants must meet the requirements of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship - entry with a student visa (higher education) and demonstrate an overall Academic IELTS score of 7.0 (across all bands); successful completion of studies equivalent to Australian Year 12 education (minimum study score of 25 in one of the VCE units 3 and 4 English group of subjects or equivalent); demonstrated personal attributes suitable for teaching; capacity to undertake work at degree level as demonstrated through participation in an interview and selection process including completion of a written task; Working With Children check (to be completed in Australia on arrival) and made available before commencement of the course.
Bachelor of Early Years Studies or Education (Early Years): Students who successfully complete the associate degree can apply for admission into the bachelor program. Students must show they meet the English and Maths admission requirements of these programs.

Units of Study
Credit points are a basic measure of student workload. All subjects are given a credit point value. Most subjects at NMIT are 12 credit points. A normal full-time annual workload is 96 credit points. The academic year is divided into two main semesters; full-time students usually enrol in 48 credit points each semester, part time students usually enrol in 24 credit points each semester or less.
