A career in business-oriented information technology offers the potential for great financial reward and growth, yet also demands a wide range of specialised skills and knowledge. This program has been designed to provide theoretical knowledge and high-level vocational skills in information technology with a business focus, meeting the needs of local and multinational organisations, as well as the broader business community.

NMIT's Associate Degree of Information Technology is a newly accredited qualification designed to meet the growing demand for business professionals qualified in the areas of network security, business information systems and software development.

This course is up-to-date, industry-relevant and consistent with the emerging trends in information technology education.

The Associate Degree of Information Technology provides:

  • the integration of an academically rigorous program in information technology with the emerging area of network security, business intelligence and cloud application development
  • a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of information technology and business
  • the latest information technology practices regarding the introduction of network security standards, recently evolving business intelligence and e-business applications and systems
  • graduate outcomes which are practical, solutions-oriented, showcasing a range of skills in today's information technology enabling business environments.

The associate degree program also includes traditional, mainstream information technology subjects such as:

  • networking
  • programming
  • systems analysis
  • database systems

Graduates of the associate degree may articulate directly in the Bachelor of Information Technology by undertaking an additional year of study.

Graduates will be able to make a meaningful contribution to the information technology profession and more broadly, the business community.

Entrance Requirements

Local Students:

Successful completion of Year 12 VCE (or equivalent with English), or successful completion of a minimum TAFE diploma or other higher education course (any). Relevant industry or life experience that demonstrates capacity to undertake study at degree level.

International Students:

Successful completion of studies equivalent to Australian Year 12 education or relevant employment experience. English language proficiency equivalent to Academic IELTS overall band score of 6.0.

Units of Study

Credit points are a basic measure of student workload. All subjects are given a credit point value. Most subjects at NMIT are 12 credit points. A normal full-time annual workload is 96 credit points. The academic year is divided into two main semesters; full-time students usually enrol in 48 credit points each semester, part time students usually enrol in 24 credit points each semester or less.
