If you want a career in the creative industries, or simply love to write and want to improve as a writer, NMIT’s Associate Degree of Writing and Publishing is for you.

The associate degree makes up the first two years of the Bachelor of Writing and Publishing. It is intended for people who already have abilities in these areas but want to develop them further.

Employment possibilities include: professional writing, editing, design, and many other publishing positions, print or web-based.

The Associate Degree of Writing and Publishing is nested within the Bachelor of Writing and Publishing. It comprises the first two years. Students may exit the degree program at this point or complete the third year to obtain the Bachelor qualifcation.

Career Opportunities

Career opportunities for graduates include: fiction and non-fiction writing editing commissioning copyediting technical writing corporate writing script and speech writing tender writing proof reading publishing assistant media liaison officer industry or community based consultant project officer project manager production controller playwright researcher

Entrance Requirements

Local Students:

Satisfactory completion of Year 12 VCE or equivalent with a minimum score of 25 in a VCE (or equivalent) English subject, or satisfactory completion of the Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing, or relevant industry experience that demonstrates capacity to undertake work at degree level. Normally, relevant industry experience would be defined as professional engagement in the industry as a writer, editor, production assistant, or desktop publisher over a period of several years. Applicants will be required to present a folio and attend an interview. Mature age applicants may be required to provide a portfolio of original writing work (published or other) that represents engagement in a range of aspects in the craft of writing, over a number of years. Detailed guidelines for the folio process will be provided to applicants.

International Students:

English language proficiency of Academic IELTS overall band score of 6.5*, with a minimum score of 6.5* in writing and a minimum score of 6.0 in the other bands.

* If students have not achieved an Academic IELTS score of 6.5, please contact the department to arrange a web-teleconference interview and to present a folio of written work. Please email the department for more information on folio and interview requirements.

Assessment Methods

Assessment methods for both the Associate Degree and Bachelor degree are broad, and include: essays, interviews, presentations, reports, writing folios, assignments, journals, work-shopping, writing and publishing projects.

Materials

Lists of materials required and book lists are provided at the start of the course, although students are required to purchase very few texts. International students: AU$300 materials levy to be paid upfront at the start of the course.

Units of Study

Credit points are a basic measure of student workload. All subjects are given a credit point value. Most subjects at NMIT are 12 credit points. A normal full-time annual workload is 96 credit points. The academic year is divided into two main semesters; full-time students usually enrol in 48 credit points each semester, part time students usually enrol in 24 credit points each semester or less.
