About the program
The Home and Community Care training program develops multi-skilled workers for a broad range of services provided to frail older people and younger people with disabilities (and their families) living in the community.

In 2009/2010 this course is being delivered as a Traineeship Program for people employed in local government.

This program aims to provide a balanced view of the issues and approaches to work in the sector. The Home and Community Care Program is a growth area which is constantly evolving to meet the needs of clients living at home. The program is designed for people who are working in this field as well as those who are interested in working in this sector.

What can I do with my qualification?
As a HACC worker you could be employed by a variety of agencies, including local councils, to provide a range of support services to clients in their home.
This is done in a non judgemental manner and may include:

  • Assisting with activities of daily living
  • Maximising client's independence
  • Monitoring client's well-being
  • Advocacy
  • Referral

About the staff
The program is delivered by staff with many years experience in the community sector and specifically in the HACC field. Teachers in the program have themselves worked in specialist services for both older people and people with disabilities.

Course Duration
Part-time: You will be studying at NMIT for one day per week for the entire year. You will also be undertaking 300 hours of practical placement.

Traineeship: You will be studying at NMIT for one day per week for the entire year. To be enrolled as a trainee you must be employed by a home and community care (HACC) employer for a minimum of 15 hours per week.

Online: You can undertake four units from the Certificate III in Home and Community Care on line. This study mode is designed for people who already hold a Certificate III in Aged Care qualification.

Pathways to Further Study

On successful completion of your studies you will have the option of completing another 5 units to qualify for the Certificate IV in Aged Care Work. For further details, please contact Health and Community Studies.

Career Opportunities

The Home and Community Care Program is a growth area which is constantly evolving to meet the needs of frail aged people and younger people with disabilities, and their families.

The Certificate III in Home and Community Care is an entry level qualification. This certificate enables people to gain employment in home and community care funded agencies who have frail aged and younger people with disabilities in their client group.

Entrance Requirements

You must have sufficient spoken and written English skills to perform the role of support worker and to complete the training. You must also be mature enough to undertake the role of support worker which requires insight and problem solving abilities usually only gained with life experience.

You will need to attend a selection interview.

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed in a variety of ways both in the classroom and in the workplace. Assessments include: Demonstration of tasks/techniques, Group activities, In class activities, Written work, Work based projects.

Workbooks and class materials are supplied to you at a cost of $79 (subject to change). You are required to supply your own stationary.
