This Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) has been designed to show you How to Start Your Own Building Business and prepare you for the Building Practitioners Board registration - an important first step towards starting your own construction business or allow you to work in the building industry as a subcontractor.
This course is is offered through the Building Structures and Services department as a builders registration course to prepare students for registration as a builder and to run their own business in Australia’s booming construction industry.
Develop your building knowledge and skills so you can:
- prepare for registration as a builder (this includes Building Practitioners Board application preparation)
- compile an individual folio of evidence to be used at the Building Practitioners Board interview
- successfully manage and operate a registered building business.
The course is also good preparation for a potential career in property development.
The course is run at NMIT’s Heidelberg campus with a flexible teaching arrangement including options to study at night or on line. Students may also complete some project work off campus or apply for Skills Recognition for units where they already have an equivalent qualification or practical experience.Students must complete 13 core subjects and 3 electives to attain the Certificate IV Builders Registration qualification.

This course offers a range of specific subjects to prepare participants to apply for registration to the Building Practitioners Board. Graduates may also gain employment in the carpentry, bricklaying or plastering sector of the construction industry and, as experience is gained, advance to supervisory roles on small projects such as building and construction project supervisor, planner, coordinator or manager.
