A builder coordinates the construction of a building taking responsibility for the overall completion of the job, including selecting contractors, overseeing the work and its quality and liaising with the client. The builder may also be the appropriately licensed person with responsibility under the relevant building-licensing authority in the state.
The Certificate IV course is designed to meet the needs of builders and managers of small to medium building businesses. The course covers building codes and standards, planning, estimating and costing, legal requirements and contracts, structural principles and techniques, sustainability and health and safety in the context of low-rise construction.

Students completing the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) may wish to further their studies in the Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Building & Construction. Students may be granted advanced standing for related units of competence. Students who successfully complete the Diploma may also seek entry and advanced standing in degree courses in building & construction offered by universities.
