The Certificate IV in Design is an entry level course for people who have a passion and flair for design. You will work on several different skills but will also complete set projects to develop particular skills to a higher level.

This course articulates into a number of Diploma level courses including:

  • Diploma of Photoimaging
  • Diploma of Visual Art

You will build your own portfolio under expert supervision and guidance as well as exhibiting your work in our NMIT galleries and external private galleries. NMIT’s design students have had a very high rate of employment at the completion of their courses. Our students are consistent winners of competitions and awards, and our staff are practicing designers.

Pathways to Further Study

This course is an entry level pathway for students wanting to apply for diploma courses in product design, graphic design, illustration and related design studies.

Career Opportunities

This course provides pathways to further design study in areas such as graphic art, product design and illustration. The course also provides entry level skills for a range of people currently working in, or planning to enter the design industry.

Entrance Requirements

Local Students:

Successful completion of VCE or mature age. Applicants who have not completed VCE must be at least 16 years old and have been out of school for at least one year. All prospective students must attend an interview session where they will be required to present a folio of recent work which demonstrates the use of a range of materials and techniques. Following the VTAC application period, late applications will be accepted directly through the Visual Arts department.

International Students:

Australian Year 12 (or recognised equivalent) or relevant work experience. IELTS 5.5 or higher (or recognised equivalents). Mature Age students are encouraged to apply. A recent portfolio of work relevant to course preference must accompany the application. Applicants in Australia are required to attend an interview and present a folio.

Materials

Students must pay a AU$300 materials levy upfront at the start of the course. Throughout the course students are expected to supply additional materials when required.

The student tuition fee is indicative only and subject to change given individual circumstances at enrolment. Additional fees may apply such services and amenities fees.
