This course is designed for those who aim to have a career as a professional contract bookkeeper or currently employed as a bookkeeper, seeking qualification to prepare BAS (Business Activity Statements) reports. The course meets the minimum requirements under the new Tax Agent's Services Act 2009, for registration as a BAS agent.

This course of study is part of the Financial Services Training Package, a set of qualifications recognised throughout Australia and designed by the Financial Services Industry to provide skilled staff for the growing finance sector. It provides practical training in the areas of: establishing and maintaining cash accounting systems and accrual accounting systems, carry out Business Activity and Instalment Activity Statements, maintain asset and inventory records, prepare financial statements and establishing and maintaining a payroll system.

Courses are developed under the Australian Qualifications Framework, in close consultation with industry and professional associations. The Certificate IV is a nationally endorsed qualification.

The course can be undertaken two days per week (Monday and Thursday) over 16 weeks. Studies may also be undertaken part-time evening, off campus (self-paced) or a combination of these.

Career Opportunities

Job opportunities include self-employed as a BAS service provider in your own business, employed by a registered tax agent or accountant and preparing BAS for a client base, performing various bookkeeping duties within an organisation.

Entrance Requirements

There are no formal entrance requirements to the course. Applicants must be able to demonstrate to the satisfaction of the department that they are capable of completing the course having regard to the relevant competence levels of the Australian Qualifications Framework.

Various forms of assessment may be used including classroom testing, assignments, presentation, group work, case studies, and workplace assessment.
