This Course in ESL is offered through the Youth Unit's Young Adult Migrant Education Courses (YAMEC).
This beginner course is for young adults from non-English speaking backgrounds between 15 to 26 years old who have disrupted, incomplete or no prior education. The course aims to develop English language, numeracy and study skills to enter into study in more advanced ESL courses.
The program content is dependent on the needs of students.
During the course the participants will:
- Develop a language learning plan with support
- Develop survival numeracy skills
Students will also learn to use listening, speaking, reading and writing skills with support to:
- communicate basic personal details and needs
- give and respond to basic instructions and information
- read and write short, basic messages and forms
- read and write short basic factual texts

Pathways to Further Study
Students are advised to complete an English and study skills certificate at level 4 before going on to mainstream study.
Career Opportunities
Students who achieve a certificate in the Course in ESL are able to move to a Certificate I in ESL (Access) to continue their English language and study skills training, which can assist them towards their goal of work, further education or vocational training.
Entrance Requirements
All applicants are interviewed before placement in the program.

Materials
A range of materials and equipment is used during the course and students are provided with worksheets during classes. Students also have access to a range of facilities and services to assist with their learning and well being while at TAFE, including computer and language labs, vocational counselling, library facilities and sport and recreation facilities.

The student tuition fee is indicative only and subject to change given individual circumstances at enrolment.
