This Course in Initial General Education for Adults (CGEA) is an ESL course offered through the Youth Unit's Young Adult Migrant Education Courses (YAMEC).
This beginner course is for young adults from non-English speaking backgrounds between 15 to 26 years old who have disrupted, incomplete or no prior education. The course aims to develop English language, numeracy and study skills to enter into study in more advanced ESL courses.

Improve your reading, writing and spoken English, and your understanding of Australian culture, current affairs and government, while meeting other young migrants and Australians from non-English speaking backgrounds. Improving your English will make it easier to deal with government departments like Immigration and Centrelink, do the banking or shopping, visit the doctor, or access community services and groups.

Depending on their individual needs and progress, students may undertake more specific subjects as outlined below or move into mainstream study.
Career Opportunities
Students who achieve a certificate at the Course level are able to move to the Certificate I in General Education for Adults (Introductory) to continue their English language and study skills training, which can assist them towards their goal of work, further education or vocational training.

All applicants are interviewed before placement in the program.
Materials
Assessment Methods
Assessment is ongoing and can occur at any time during the program. Assessment methods may include: a portfolio of accumulated evidence; teacher observation and/or checklists; evidence gained through projects or program participation; awards from recognised programs; self assessment inventories; oral and written work.
Materials
A range of materials and equipment is used during the course and students are provided with worksheets during classes. Students also have access to a range of facilities and services to assist with their learning and well being while at TAFE, including computer and language labs, vocational counselling, library facilities and sport and recreation facilities.
