If you love to write and want to improve as a writer, or you already have writing skills and want to develop them further, NMIT’s Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing is ideal and will prepare you for a career in the creative industries.

You will develop your writing, editing and print production skills within a course designed for emerging writers and editors, with a range of specialities to choose from. There are diverse study areas including non-fiction, editing and proofreading, popular and literary fiction, poetry and writing for children.

NMIT’s Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing is taught by experienced teachers who are published writers themselves.

NMIT’s Edwina Preston is a writer and performer with rave reviews for The Inheritance of Ivorie Hammer which is her first novel. Her first book was a biography of Howard Arkley, Not Just a Suburban Boy. Edwina is an invaluable guide and mentor for NMIT writing and editing students.

As a Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing student you will also have the opportunity to edit, design and lay out the twice-yearly course publication, INfusion, as well as to see your work published in it, and to read your work at one of our four Student Readings at Willow Bar in Northcote.

The course is taught at the Collingwood campus which is convenient for public transport links.

The Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing provides the possibility of articulation to NMIT's Bachelor of Writing and Publishing, university courses such as La Trobe University's Bachelor of Arts Journalism and Professional Writing/Literature majors. Similar courses are available at RMIT, Deakin and Victoria University.

The Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing is for those wishing to improve their writing and editing skills for employment, freelance work or further study.

Entrance Requirements

Local Students:

Students are required to complete the Certificate IV in Professional Writing and Editing before they can attain the diploma. Applicants should submit a writing folio and attend a selection interview. The folio must include varied examples (such as short pieces, extracts from long pieces, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, academic writing and so on).

International Students:

Students are required to complete the Certificate IV in Professional Writing and Editing before they can advance to the diploma in the second year. Australian Year 12 (or recognised equivalent) or relevant work experience. IELTS Academic 6.5 or higher (or recognised equivalents). Mature Age.
