The Introduction to Trade Skills ESL program is a six-month VCAL course offered through the Youth Unit's Young Adult Migrant Education Courses (YAMEC).

The program prepares students for further training or employment in the building and construction industry. It includes trade workshop classes and industry visits and all students will have the opportunity to get their General Construction Induction Card (White Card).

The program will be delivered by a qualified ESL professional. After completing the course students will get help in looking for apprenticeships or applying for pre-apprenticeships.

YAMEC is designed for young adults with migrant or refugee backgrounds. Students are between 15-26 years of age and have not completed their secondary schooling or need to develop further English language and literacy skills.

Classes are delivered in a supportive and engaging environment to help students minimise any barriers that may prevent their participation in education. The program has strong connections with community agencies and students have access to a Managed Individual Pathways (MIPs) worker.

NMIT also offers a range of VCAL programs through the Youth Unit.
