Work towards your future in the trades

Are you a young person interested in the trades but not sure which trade?

NMIT’s Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Ticket to a Trade is a six month program that will give you the opportunity to find out what trade you might like to undertake in the future. The program aims to enhance your communication, numeracy skills and employability skills and give you the opportunity to experiences a range of trades.

VCAL Ticket to a Trade can be undertaken at Foundation, Intermediate or Senior levels. VCAL is an accredited senior school completion certificate.

Guidance for your career

You will have access to a Student Pathways Advisor (SPA) and take part in trade workshops to help you decide which trade you would like to undertake in the future. Careers counselling will be an integral part of the program.

Study in a dedicated Youth Unit

NMIT’s VCAL Ticket to a Trade will give you supported training in literacy, numeracy and communication skills to get you ready for further study, pre-apprenticeships and employment.

You will be part of NMIT’s unique Youth Unit, with our expert teachers who specialise in working with young people and you will benefit from NMIT’s strong connections with community agencies.

As an NMIT student, you will have access to our libraries and independent learning services in addition to experienced teachers to help you learn.

On completion, students may go onto further study, pre-apprenticeships, apprenticeships or employment.

Career Opportunities

Students who achieve a VCAL Certificate at Foundation level are able to move to a VCAL Intermediate course, a pre-apprenticeship, apprenticeship, a VET certificate or employment.

Entrance Requirements

Students must be at least 15 years old and have not completed Year 12. Applicants will be interviewed through October and November, with enrolment through December.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is ongoing and can occur at any time during the program. Assessment methods may include: a portfolio of accumulated evidence; teacher observation and/or checklists; evidence gained through projects or program participation; awards from recognised programs; self assessment inventories; oral and written work.
