NMIT's Agriculture & Animal Sciences Department facilitates practical training via a number of fully operational award-winning properties to provide the best career outcomes for every student in the following areas:

  • Wine making, wine marketing and vineyard management
  • Freshwater aquaculture and hatchery management, including recirculating and outdoor pond systems
  • Beef management and production
  • Deer and goat farming
  • Beekeeping
  • Sheep
  • Thoroughbred racing training and farriery
  • Natural resources


Courses
Courses offered by the Animal and Agriculture department cover certificate, diploma and degree levels in agriculture, viticulture, civil construction, transport, distribution and warehousing, equine studies, animal technology and natural resources.

Courses are designed in consultation with industry and often delivered by industry experts, including practicing farmers and managers. NMIT also utilises the additional resources of industry by delivering training on-site or through field trips to selected farms and vineyards.

The Animal and Agriculture department provides students with practical training in Victoria's prospering industries:

  • Cutting edge courses for ultrasound scanning of beef cattle, fertiliser field trials and cell grazing
  • Horse studies and breeding, stablehand/trackrider, farriery and racing
  • Award-winning viticulture and winemaking facilities using fourteen grape varieties grown at Northern Lodge vineyard in the Plenty Valley
  • Cattle and deer farming, aquaculture and pasture production
