Welcome to the Visual Arts Department
Hi, my name is Rachael Cowley and I am the Head of the Visual Arts department at NMIT. The Visual Arts department at NMIT offers a variety of courses for students interested in pursuing a career in the diverse range of creative fields, in both fine and applied arts areas.
Students can choose pathways that lead to rewarding careers as an exhibiting artist or writer, focusing on such disciplines as painting, printmaking, drawing, digital art, photo media and creative writing; alternatively students can pursue a career in high demand commercial industries such as publishing, commercial design, multi media, studio photography, web design, writing and editing.
An NMIT Visual Arts qualification is a great entree into a career in the creative industries. We offer Certificate III courses through to Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas in specialist areas such as:
Creative Product Development, Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography and Visual Arts, and Professional Writing & Editing.
Our students have gone on to launch successful artistic and professional careers and are highly sought after by art and design industry employers, the higher education sector and commercial galleries.
NMIT students learn from teachers who are experienced artists and freelancers in their own right.

In addition to our wide range of courses and dedicated teaching team, we also provide students with lots of opportunities to apply what they have learnt:
- Working with industry to develop design solutions for events and activities
- Planning and participating in exhibitions
- Entering competitions and engaging in commercial, public and community projects as well as publishing, writing and producing a collection of stories.
