Media Release - Super Thursday gives Annie 20-20 career vision
4 September 2012
25-year-old Annie Marshall already had a good job and a solid career, but she knew it wasn't right for her. She had always wanted to work with children, in the field of early childhood education, but wasn't sure how to go about it.
For Annie attending a Super Thursday at NMIT (Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE) made it easier for her to decide that the Bachelor of Education (Early Years) at NMIT was the right pathway for her.
After working as an Optical Dispenser at an optometrist's for five years, Annie wanted to move on. She found that the information in the VTAC guide just wasn't enough to answer some of the questions she needed answered before finalising her decision.
“I wanted to hear first-hand about the opportunities that existed in the field and if the course provided by NMIT was different to the courses provided by other institutions. I wanted to find a course that would provide me with more contact hours in the field and I also wanted smaller class sizes,” she said.
She first found out about Super Thursdays from NMIT's Course and Career Guide and decided to attend the Bachelor of Education (Early Years) information session to be able to meet the teachers, and talk to some of the students already enrolled in the course.
“Attending a Super Thursday really made the choice easier for me. Talking to the teachers was very helpful. It was reassuring to find out that there were more placement days in the course which would mean more hands-on experience with children. NMIT also has a smaller course intake which meant smaller classes and more individual attention.”
“Meeting other students already enrolled in the course was also very helpful. I wanted to hear about their own experiences and if I would be able to handle the workload. There were a lot of questions I needed answers to before taking on such a long commitment and I wanted to make sure this course was right for me,” she said.
Super Thursdays are when NMIT opens its doors to potential students to explore the facilities and attend information sessions. They are like mini Open Days held throughout the year.
The next NMIT Super Thursday is on Thursday 20 September at all of NMIT's metropolitan campuses. The day includes information sessions, tours and careers advice from industry experts spanning a wide selection of NMIT programs.
