Fire Safety Information for At Risk Refugees

For newly-arrived migrants and refugees, fire safety issues are of paramount importance. But many of these people do not have the English skills or cultural values to know what the right procedures are. To address this, refugee young people from African countries such as Sudan and Eritrea as well as China and Afghanistan will visit Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) firefighters at Eastern Hill fire station, 456 Albert St (cnr Gisborne St) East Melbourne to receive information about fire safety and emergency procedures on Friday 27 July between 10.30-2.30pm.

New Employment Services Program at NMIT

Traditionally, the recruitment industry was a dynamic business with a high staff turnover and a lack of specific, formal qualifications of its personnel. Recruitment staff were sometimes university graduates with business degrees or other human services qualifications. At the same time, there were people working in the industry without any qualifications who had simply worked their way up through experience on the job. Employment services' staff working in government agencies and specialist services such as disability services, were also without an accredited national qualification.

Community Project for Local Charity and NMIT

For more than 20 years, Open Family Australia has been collecting second-hand bookshelves from various premises to store its thousands of educational books for its young students. Now, the Footscray-based charity has received 15, new, purpose built bookshelves from Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) as part of a community project for the Institute's 12 pre-apprentices in joinery/shopfitting/stairbuilding.

Since he was a mere four-year-old, he has thrilled at the catch - thriving on finding where they are, getting them hooked and then, reeling them in, and of course, trying to guess what fish he has actually caught. Throughout his childhood and adolescence, fishing forays into the Victorian environs dominated his life; and he already knew in primary school that he wanted a future working in the fishing industry.

New Educational Initiative for Public Housing Tenants

Public housing tenants in the northern suburbs of Melbourne are receiving training in aged care under a new educational initiative by the Victorian Government. As part of a Public Tenants' Employment Program first introduced in November 2004 by the Government's Department of Human Services, 15 long-term unemployed tenants are studying Certificate III in Aged Care at Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT).

A New World of Engineering

Erin Holmes was always the traditional female; interested in all things pretty and feminine. She also liked working with her hands and turned her creative streak into arts and crafts as an adolescent. During her secondary school years in Scotland , where she had moved to live with her mother, sister and brother as a seven year-old, Erin , 26, had no clear career goal or ambition. After completing Year 11 in Edinburgh , she worked for British Telecom in a call centre, and in 2001, returned to Melbourne.

When Mill Park resident, Bianca De Bonitatibus completed Year 12, she was tired of the study routine and wanted a job to earn some money. After undertaking Certificate II in Business Administration as a school student as part of a Vocational Education and Training (VET) program at Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT), Bianca, 21, settled on an office administration job but found there was no career path ahead of her.

Pursuing a fervent passion for cars, Christian Alvarez became a new and used car salesman when he completed Year 12. It had been his adolescent ambition; believing it would suit his fascination for automobiles of all kinds. But just two years down the track, he called it quits; unable to enjoy the stress and pressure of the job and preferring to don more casual attire and work with his hands in the outdoors.

Finding His Future at NMIT

For more than six years after completing Year 12 in 1999, Abdul Allouche flirted with his future with uncertainty and confusion. In 2000, he enrolled at La Trobe University in a bachelor arts degree, stayed only one month and then moved on to Monash University at its Gippsland campus for a bachelor degree in psychology. Two months later, he jettisoned that study and decided to pursue an option in retail.
