Successful Employment Outcomes

Unemployment might be dropping, but for 15 people in Victoria, some with high formal qualifications from overseas, finding suitable employment has continued to be a problem. To enhance employment opportunities for these people, both male and female and aged from 18 years to those in their 50s and from ethnically diverse backgrounds, the Public Records Office Victoria (PROV) initiated a training program with Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) as part of the Victorian Government's Workforce Participation Partnership.

When West Preston student Tania Santamaria was ready to make a career choice for her future during her Year 11 studies at secondary school, her comfortable life was cruelly interrupted beyond her control. Just before completing Year 11, she was diagnosed with a large ovarian cyst - the size of a cantaloupe - causing her severe pain and resulting in an operation.

Reflections on his own childhood experiences inspired Oliver Ward's creativity when he was confronted to make a child's chair as part of his studies at Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT). Oliver, 27, of Heidelberg, a second-year student in the Diploma of Arts - Furniture Studies, at NMIT's Heidelberg campus, visited a local Banyule kindergarten as part of a student excursion to familiarise himself with a children's environment and their seating needs from an ergonomic perspective.

When Armadale film maker Philippe Charluet attended a performance of the Sydney Dance Company 25 years ago, it was the first time he had ever seen contemporary dance. Enraptured by the performance, Philippe went backstage to praise choreographer Graeme Murphy, asking him if he could film his dance performance.

When Taylors Hill resident Iain Capovilla first embarked on an apprenticeship in Commercial Cookery over two years ago, he believed there wasn't much to cooking and that anyone could be a chef. Having tossed the garlic and spices at his family home during his secondary school days and enjoyed working in the heat of a kitchen, Iain, 20, thought cooking was a simple albeit good job.

For more than a decade after leaving secondary school in 1991, Tara Shannon had no clear career direction in her life. She floated in and out of numerous jobs and study programs including working as a waitress, nanny, horse trail riding leader and rouseabout as well as undertaking further education in horse breeding and psychology.

As a final-year student in the Diploma of Arts - Furniture Design, at Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT), Nick Pearce knew what he would create as his final assessment piece. He would design a contemporary desk which he wanted for his own use at home; a desk that was functional and utilitarian that would be in a class of its own.

When dental nurse Melanie Stockman travelled to Germany to enhance her skills in the dental industry in 2002, her commitment to her career was slowly, albeit unconsciously, undermined by a new awareness about the world of high finance and business. Melanie, 27, of Epping, lived in Dusseldorf for three years studying at Dusseldorf University for the Diploma of Dental Hygiene while she worked for a periodontist at the same time.

Skilled migrants cannot always access employment opportunities in Australia because of a different workplace culture and practices in this country. For more than a decade, Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) has run training programs for overseas qualified professionals to impart information to skilled migrants about how to enhance their knowledge and expertise for an Australian workplace.
