Balinese Gamelan Music Concert at NMIT

For the people of Bali, their traditional Gamelan music is part of a culture that unites the community as one. It is about inclusive togetherness; where performers share their musical experiences as a group for the people. Now, 30 second-year students in the new, specialist Australian Popular Music degree at the Fairfield campus of Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT), will perform Gamelan music at a concert as part of their World Music Studies on Wednesday 30 May between 7.30-9.30pm at the campus' Yarra Edge Theatre.

Growing up in Baghdad, Iraq, Waseem Abdul-Ahad thought caravans were 'holiday homes for the rich.' They were very expensive and belonged to the upper echelons of Iraqi society. Now in Australia, Waseem, 19, of Lalor, has the opportunity to work on caravan manufacturing as a student in the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) at Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT).

As a 16-year-old boy living in Alice Springs, Sean Colson had no idea there was a trade in locksmithing. He flirted with other trades such as commercial cookery and then as a trainee manager at Coles, but abandoned his employment as the jobs weren’t what he was looking for. Two years later, he embarked on an apprenticeship in locksmithing after learning about the trade, thinking there wouldn’t be much to cutting keys.

But Tara, 33, has just been elected as NMIT student representative on the NMIT Council which meets every two months to discuss business on a corporate level.

Playing marbles in the playground during the 'marble season' over the summer months at school became an obsession; Tae, 24, was attracted to their luminosity as 'a little world in a tiny sphere.'

Preston Neighbourhood House has engaged the skills of marketing students at Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE's (NMIT) Preston campus to conduct a survey and develop a marketing plan to help the House ascertain and meet the needs of the local community. The House Manager Niel Gidman said its Committee of Management decided to undertake a needs analysis of the Darebin community to see if its current programs and services were still of relevance with the changing demographics of the community.

New Initiatives in Education at NMIT

Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT), a sponsor of the festival, will introduce new training initiatives for people working in the wine industry in the Ararat region over the next few months. The Institute is offering workplace-based, on the job training in a range of vocational programs for students unable to access its Ararat campus. The programs include studies in Certificate III in Food Processing (Wine) in viticulture, cellar operations, cellar door operations, packaging operations and laboratory operations.
