NMIT patisserie student Sharyn Frantz is busy perfecting her croque en bouche, a dessert that’s now back in vogue thanks to the popular Channel Ten Masterchef series. The 41-year-old mum of two, who is completing the Certificate III in Hospitality (Patisserie) at the Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE, is about to launch her own catering business at her home in Woodend. Blackbird Catering will provide cakes, desserts and pastries for birthday parties, weddings, lunches and other events. Thanks to an NMIT study grant award, Sharyn is well on her way to buying all the equipment she needs to get her started.

Ag Zone precinct a success at 2010 Seymour Alternative Farming Expo

NMIT, through the departments of Agriculture & Animal Science, Horticulture and Hospitality had a significant involvement in the 2010 Seymour Alternative Farming Expo (February 19-21). The event is reputedly the largest event of its type in the Southern Hemisphere. This year it attracted 42,000 visitors over its three days, who hailed from Melbourne's northern and eastern fringes in addition to the State's central and north eastern regions.

News - Calling all bass players! Open the door to your music career at NMIT

NMIT music teacher Pav Chudiak started playing with bands when he was 17. But it wasn’t until much later that he discovered a passion for bass guitar. Chudiak, who plays in original bands, with covers band Blue Pocket and jazz group The Tidy Trio, was always on vocals, occasionally dabbling with the guitar. Then a group of NMIT students asked him to play bass. He was keen to give it a go. "It really took off. I realised I loved playing bass. For me it had the rhythm and tonality to it that was much more appealing than guitar and it’s a real grounding for the band. It often sets the pace."

News - Greg Arnold keeps on rockin'

One of the more famous members of staff is Greg Arnold, who lectures in the Bachelor of Australian Popular Music program at NMIT. He was a vocalist and songwriter for early 1990s folk rock band, Things of Stone and Wood, and has a new band, the Swamp Dandies. When Malay student Pedmoi "Mimi" Ho first arrived in Melbourne she only knew how to cook traditional Chinese or Thai food. Now she's treating her family to roast lamb, hollandaise sauce and, her favourite, pancakes with strawberry sauce. "I like cooking, especially western-style food. I would really like to work in a hotel restaurant in Melbourne when I finish my course," she says.
