NMIT helps Kinglake residents make a clean start after the 2009 Bushfires

Bathroom Laundry Unit being unloaded at Kinglake

NMIT organised the delivery of these units, ready to use, to house sites where people were living in caravans, buses etc but had no bathroom and washing facilities. The units were transported on donated crane trucks and will continue to be delivered in groups of two as NMIT students and staff manage to build them over the coming months.

Generous contributions came from the Building Industry

Soon after the fires, NMIT's Faculty of Building and Construction came up with the idea of constructing 12 bathroom laundry facilities to donate to the bushfire victims trying to re-establish themselves in the Kinglake area. The project has involved staff and students from all NMIT’s building trades areas including Building, Joinery, Plastering, Painting, Plumbing, Floor and wall tiling and Electrical.

Help to construct the units has also come from generous contributions of materials and services from building industry representatives including Swan Plumbing, CSR, Marbletrend, Associated Cranes, Jackeroo, Reivers Industries, Doors Plus, Roberts Contrax and many more.

Bathroom Laundry Unit - Gas heater

Each unit is plumbed to take a washing machine on the verandah area. They are ready to hook directly onto a pressure pump water supply which then gives them hot and cold water (instantaneous gas heated). The units are also wired ready to be plugged into temporary or permanent power.
