New Flexible Approach to Wine Study

15 November 2007

In 2008, Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) will launch a new, flexible study program for its specialist degree in viticulture and winemaking, designed for people whose commitments do not allow for traditional study routines. The program will cater for students in regional locations or from overseas who cannot attend full or part time tuition at NMITs Epping campus in Victoria due to work and/or family commitments.

New Training for Potential Jockeys at NMIT

If you are dreaming of becoming a professional jockey, Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) can offer you a head start. In February 2008, NMIT will be the only TAFE provider in Melbourne to offer the full-time Certificate II in Racing (Stablehand) as a pre-apprenticeship for potential jockeys. NMIT is offering this new training at the request of Racing Victoria Limited (RVL) to assist in the talent identification process for apprentice jockeys.

A charitable endeavour in carpentry – that’s the name of the game for students at Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) who will present Yarralea Children’s Centre with a new cubby house as a donation on Wednesday 24 October between 9.30-10am. The Centre is located at 54 Yarralea St Alphington. The cubby house, about two metres high and over three metres wide, was constructed by students in the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) carpentry program at NMIT’s Heidelberg campus, as part of work experience on a real-life and personal development community project.

A need for trained bilingual health workers to address health issues in the refugee and migrant communities has led to a unique new course at Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT). The Victorian Multicultural Commission has funded a new project for Bilingual Refugee and Migrant Health Workers, with NMIT and the Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture as partners in the project. As part of the project, NMIT has developed a free,12-month training course which will begin in September at NMIT’s Collingwood campus.

Fire Safety Information for At Risk Refugees

For newly-arrived migrants and refugees, fire safety issues are of paramount importance. But many of these people do not have the English skills or cultural values to know what the right procedures are. To address this, refugee young people from African countries such as Sudan and Eritrea as well as China and Afghanistan will visit Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) firefighters at Eastern Hill fire station, 456 Albert St (cnr Gisborne St) East Melbourne to receive information about fire safety and emergency procedures on Friday 27 July between 10.30-2.30pm.

Traditionally, the recruitment industry was a dynamic business with a high staff turnover and a lack of specific, formal qualifications of its personnel. Recruitment staff were sometimes university graduates with business degrees or other human services qualifications. At the same time, there were people working in the industry without any qualifications who had simply worked their way up through experience on the job. Employment services' staff working in government agencies and specialist services such as disability services, were also without an accredited national qualification.

Unemployment might be dropping, but for 15 people in Victoria, some with high formal qualifications from overseas, finding suitable employment has continued to be a problem. To enhance employment opportunities for these people, both male and female and aged from 18 years to those in their 50s and from ethnically diverse backgrounds, the Public Records Office Victoria (PROV) initiated a training program with Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) as part of the Victorian Government's Workforce Participation Partnership.

For more than six years after completing Year 12 in 1999, Abdul Allouche flirted with his future with uncertainty and confusion. In 2000, he enrolled at La Trobe University in a bachelor arts degree, stayed only one month and then moved on to Monash University at its Gippsland campus for a bachelor degree in psychology. Two months later, he jettisoned that study and decided to pursue an option in retail.

Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT), a sponsor of the festival, will introduce new training initiatives for people working in the wine industry in the Ararat region over the next few months. The Institute is offering workplace-based, on the job training in a range of vocational programs for students unable to access its Ararat campus. The programs include studies in Certificate III in Food Processing (Wine) in viticulture, cellar operations, cellar door operations, packaging operations and laboratory operations.

A bay filly, out of Staremma (NZ) by Redoute's Choice, fetched $550,000 at the sales, purchased by Woodland Stud in NSW to be trained by John Hawkes.

New CD is All in the Ear

Growing up with a love of music, Alex Gate-Eastley never wanted to read or compose music; indeed, she just wanted to play by ear for her own enjoyment. Now, the 35-year-old second year student in the Advanced Diploma of Music Industry (Technical Production) at Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT), has co-written most of the music and lyrics for the first CD of the band 'Lou Bennett and the Sweet Cheeks' due for release at the end of April.
