Australian Indigenous students have two big incentives to study at NMIT in 2009. The NMIT Koorie Services Centre has confirmed that four study grants will be on offer to Australian Indigenous students in 2009 – two study grants for continuing students and two for new students enrolling in 2009.

A relationship forged eight years ago has allowed the NMIT music teacher to score something of a coup – he has managed to persuade legendary jazz-fusion guitarist, Mike Stern, to take half a day out of a four-day Australian tour to present an up-close and personal workshop for NMIT students and members of the public.

Certificate IV in TAA Delivered to Group of Deaf Learners

The Centre of Excellence for Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing has been delivering a pilot program to a group of Deaf learners in 2008. Deaf professionals, many of whom teach Auslan (Australian Sign Language), have undertaken the adapted version of the Cert IV in Training and Assessment (TAA).

TAFE students were requested to create a modern contemporary Australian commercial building using sustainable design principles, to be leased to two high profile corporate tenants. The design was to have two floors of office space, each being an independent tenancy, as well as a ground floor communal area, plus carpark.

'Human Assist Robot' introduced to Australian meat processors

Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) will introduce Australian meat processors to robot technology that has the potential to counter workplace injuries and broaden the pool of workers available to the industry. Special hands-on workshops were conducted at Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE’s (NMIT) Meat Processing and Training Centre at the Epping campus.

Bronze becomes Silver for Horticulture student

NMIT second-year landscape apprentice, Christopher Dimitriou, claimed a Bronze medal at this month’s WorldSkills Australia National Competition in Sydney. In a surprising twist, Bronze became Silver when the original second place-getter was ruled ineligible because of a discrepancy in age.

NMIT has once again scored in the Worldskills jewellery competition, with Apprentice Patrick Taylor winning the 2008 Silver medal. Patrick had to create a pendant, which tested the skills of all competitors to the limit.

Distinguished Aquaculture academic visits Victoria

Aquaculture expert Dr. Don Furnell knows fish inside out – literally. Dr. Furnell is the Chair, Fisheries and Aquaculture Department, Vancouver Island University in Canada, and has a diverse background including work as a polar bear biologist, fish population biologist and fish metabolic physiologist. He will be visiting Melbourne in August to deliver a series of lectures and workshops to Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) students.

Acclaimed Floral designer conducts workshops at NMIT

Internationally acclaimed floral designer, Wally (Vally) Klett, Stuttgart, Germany, will visit Melbourne in August to deliver a series of workshops in her specialty area of wedding floristry. Her first visit to Australia will be supported by NMIT in association with international floral and horticultural product company, Smithers-Oasis Australia Pty Ltd and local florist supplies company, Apack Pty Ltd.
Veronica’s Gamble pays off

However, the term was never so appropriate as when NMIT jewellery apprentice Veronica Arkins walked up between the designs in gold, silver and precious stones to receive her runners-up prize in the 2008 AGR Matthey ‘Next Generation’ Jewellery Design Awards.

The Great TV Studio Giveaway 2008

NMIT TV, located on the Collingwood Campus, has upgraded to full HD broadcast quality capability at the cost of $2m. The studio now matches, and in some cases surpasses national broadcast production facilities. To celebrate this event NMIT TV is running a fantastic competition, open to any school in Victoria.
2008 NMIT Graduation Ceremony

The 2008 NMIT Graduation Ceremony was held on May 22 at the Dallas Brooks Centre in East Melbourne. ABC Radio 774 presenter Jon Faine spoke of the importance of ceremony in recognising life achievements. Faine also reflected on his own experience as a student of NMIT and mentioned the knowledge and support of the NMIT teaching staff.
