They include certificate courses in both:

  • pre-apprenticeship
  • apprenticeship

The carpentry pre-apprenticeship is an intensive training program in NMIT’s purpose-built building barn at Heidelberg.

Successful completion of this course leads into an apprenticeship in:

  • carpentry
  • framework
  • formwork
  • finishing

Trainees undertaking an apprenticeship program are employed by carpenters and will train:

  • on-site with their employer
  • off-site at NMIT

Skills and knowledge you will gain:

  • using mathematical ideas and techniques
  • working with others and in teams
  • using hand and power tools
  • performing calculations and measurements
  • building structures
  • first aid
  • reading and interpreting plans
  • floor, wall and roof framing

The training centre at NMIT’s Heidelberg campus has Victoria’s most technologically advanced facilities for building and construction.

Certificate II in Building and Construction (Carpentry)
Start building your future in carpentry, specialising in joinery, stairbuilding and shopfitting to become the apprentice that every site manager wants. This pre-apprenticeship course is combined with the Certificate II in Joinery/Shopfitting/Stairbuilding (Pre-apprenticehips), and will give you the best possible chance to secure a position that will lead you to working on a diverse range of building projects.

Certificate II in Joinery Shopfitting Stairbuilding (Pre-apprenticeship)
Climb to the top as a qualified joiner, shopfitter and stairbuilder with Melbourne Polytechnic's Certificate II in Joinery/Shopfitting/Stairbuilding (Pre-apprenticeship). Work on local or major infrastructure projects with your career in joinery, especially if you are a 'hands-on' person and like to see a solid result to your work. This course is available as part of a combined qualification with the Certificate II in Furniture Making or the Certificate II in Building and Construction (Carpentry).
