Whether you want to pursue photography as a vocational career or an artistic medium, NMIT’s courses have something for you. You will learn imaging techniques and practices in both analogue and digital photography.

NMIT’s studios and darkroom provide you with an excellent opportunity to build a comprehensive folio.

Career options include:

  • professional photographer
  • digital or web-based image manipulation and design

You could also go on to further study in photography.

Industry involvement is an essential part of these courses, and study times are flexible so you can balance work commitments.

You will gain these skills and knowledge:

  • lighting techniques for studio and location
  • optics
  • small, medium and large format film camera and digital SLR camera use
  • occupational health and safety
  • traditional wet darkroom printing
  • exposure assessment and techniques
  • digital image processing and editing tools (primarily using Adobe Photoshop)
  • digital workflow systems
  • colour spaces
  • colour and file management
  • introductory graphic design

Our courses have won several national professional industry awards. You will also have the opportunity to exhibit in the NMIT Visual Arts department’s two permanent galleries, at our Preston and Fairfield campuses.

Certificate IV in Photo Imaging
Develop your brilliant career! Melbourne Polytechnic’s Certificate IV and Diploma of Photo Imaging are courses recognised by the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP). The founding institute, NMIT, is a three-time award winner for the APPA (Australian Professional Photography Awards) Institute of the Year. You will gain practical experience in the many photographic imaging techniques and practices (both analogue and digital) currently in use.
