Certificate III in Agriculture
The Certificate III in Agriculture is a general introduction to agriculture techniques, including: animal health, husbandry and handling, plus pasture and crop production, agricultural, machinery and equipment operations. You can specialise in sheep and wool, or beef production.
Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs
The Certificate IV in Mental Health is taken in conjunction with the Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs to achieve a dual qualification. Please contact the Health and Community Studies Department if you wish to enrol in the dual qualification. This qualification covers workers who provide a range of community services and community interventions to clients with mental health and other drug issues and/or implement health promotion and community interventions. Work may take place in a range of contexts such as community based organisations, residential rehabilitation services and outreach services.
Certificate III in Asset Maintenance (Pest Management - Technical)
You will learn about the correct methods of assessing pest problems and the many ways of controlling or managing pests. From this, you will be able to find employment in the pest control industry. NMIT’s purpose-built horticulture facilities at the Fairfield campus have a soils laboratory and extensive gardens for practical work.
Certificate III in Bicycles
Designed for bicycle mechanics who want to undertake full repair and servicing of bikes including diagnosing problems, repair and servicing of wheel hubs, mechanical and hydraulic braking systems, steering, suspension and drive train systems, wheel repair, frames and fitting accessories. Customer-related activities will also be undertaken.
Certificate III in Bricklaying Blocklaying
Apprenticeship
This Certificate III in Bricklaying Blocklaying is offered as an apprenticeship to local students only. Despite the economic downturn the building and construction industry continues to boom in Australia, and every little brick counts. Trainees in this course are employed by bricklayers and train on-site with their employer and off-site with NMIT. Working on full size projects at NMIT’s specially designed facilities, you will learn skills from general demolition to constructing door frames. NMIT also offers the Certificate III in Bricklaying Blocklaying as a full-time course to non-industry and international students through the Building Structures and Services Department.
Certificate III in Cabinet Making
Furniture Making
This program comprises the Furniture Making stream of the Certificate III in Cabinet Making. This Certificate III is also offered as an apprenticeship to local students. This course is the formal off-the-job component of the training required to become qualified as a tradesperson in the cabinet making/furniture making industry. The course is designed to develop skills and knowledge in communication and teamwork, hand tool, power tool and machinery use, cabinet / furniture fabrication and installation, and CAD and CNC technology. NMIT's Design Draft and Interior Fittings Department also offers a Kitchens and Bathrooms stream of the Certificate III in Cabinet Making.
Certificate III in Cabinet Making
Kitchens and Bathrooms
This program comprises the Kitchens and Bathrooms stream of the Certificate III in Cabinet Making and is also offered as an apprenticeship to local students. This course is the formal off-the-job component of the training required to become qualified as a tradesperson in the cabinet making (kitchens and bathrooms) industry. Develop skills and knowledge in areas ranging from cabinet fabrication, to CAD technology, to communication and teamwork. NMIT also offers a Furniture Making stream for the Certificate III in Cabinet Making as an apprenticeship through the Design Draft and Interior Fittings Department.
Certificate III in Carpentry
Teaches carpentry skills. Areas of study include restricted height scaffolding , explosive power tools, timber wall framing, timber pitched roof-framing, sub floor framing, timber and sheet flooring and door frames. Career opportunities include carpenter, sub contractor and contractor. Trainees work at NMIT's specially designed facilities.
Certificate III in Construction Waterproofing
This is an assessment and skill gap training course. The course is aimed at recognising suitably skilled waterproofing applicators that have the level of competence required by the industry. Where there are gaps in your skills or knowledge, you will get extra training at NMIT.
Certificate IV in Disability
If you want to find work in the disability sector or wish to enhance your options if you already work in the area, then the Cerficate IV in Disability may be the course for you. NMIT’s on-site practical rooms at its Preston campus allow you to train in a ‘real to life’ setting.
Certificate III in Driving Operations
Develop your understanding of road transport logistics, such as how to load and unload vehicles and organise work operations. NMIT has one of Australia’s best industrial training facilities, offering a range of training packages.
Certificate III in Electronics and Communications
The Certificate III in Electronics and Communications provides the skills to slect, install, set up, test, fault find, repair and maintian electronic equipment and devices at component/sub-assembly level.
Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician
The Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician is only offered as an apprenticeship. Provides competencies to select, install, set up, fault find, repair and maintain electrical systems and equipment in buildings and premises. Includes Electrical Regulatory Authorities Council (ERAC) requirements for an 'electrician's licence'.
Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade
Heavy Fabrication
This program comprises the Heavy Fabrication stream of the Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade. You will learn all about heavy fabrication techniques in this course. It is for people employed as apprentices. Heavy fabrication is traditionally known as boiler making. Boilermakers cut, shape, assemble and join heavy gauge metal parts to produce or repair containers that have to withstand pressure. NMIT also offers the Light Fabrication stream of the Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade through the Mechanical Manufacturing Department.

Light Fabrication
This program comprises the Light Fabrication stream of the Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade. NMIT also offers the Heavy Fabrication stream for the Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade through the Mechanical Manufacturing Department. You will learn all about light fabrication techniques in this course. This will enable you to complete your apprenticeship and work as a tradesman. Light fabrication is traditionally known as sheetmetal work. Perform tasks ranging from manual metal arc welding and geometric development to drawing interpretation.
Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade
Provides apprentices with a high level of basic and advanced skills in fitting and machining which they can build on through on-the-job training, including marking out, use of hand tools, drawing, turning, milling and grinding. NMIT also offers the Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade to non-industry and international students through the Mechanical Manufacturing Department.

Certificate III in Fibrous Plastering (Shopwork)
This course is designed to give student apprentices an understanding of all areas in architectural modelling, moulding, restoration and casting techniques associated with the plastering industry. Learn how to produce trade items such as ceiling roses, cornices, corbels and many other decorative functional features.
Certificate III in Floristry
Apprenticeship
This Certificate III in Floristry is offered to local students as an apprenticeship. Develop sound practical floristry skills applicable to tasks ranging from the care and selection of cut flowers, to plant identification and high-level customer service. Explore your creativity through participation in floral competitions like the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show. Local and international students can learn more about the non-industry Certificate III in Floristry qualification through the Horticulture Department.
Certificate III in Hairdressing
Apprenticeship
This Certificate III in Hairdressing is offered as an Apprenticeship and is available to local students only. If you want to discover just what the hairdressing industry is all about, the certificate will fast-track you to a career as a fully qualified hairdresser. Suitable if you have completed Certificate II. Learn about the principles of hairdressing through an exciting, fast-paced program. NMIT also offers the Certificate III in Hairdressing as a full-time non-industry course to local and international students through the Personal Services Department.
Certificate III in Horticulture (Landscape)
Provides the training component for landscape apprenticeships. Develops construction and maintenance skills. Emphasises a strong practical focus, with many landscape activities. Train in NMIT’s purpose-built, spacious landscaping facility, with a plant identification laboratory, irrigation training facilities, soils laboratory and computer laboratory.
Certificate III in Horticulture (Parks and Gardens)
Apprenticeship
This Certificate III in Horticulture (Parks and Gardens) is offered as an apprenticeship to local students. This program offers the training component for the Parks and Gardens traineeship. NMIT also offers the non-apprenticeship general Certificate III in Horticulture (Parks and Gardens) through the Horticulture Department.
Certificate III in Horticulture (Retail Nursery)
Apprenticeship and Non-apprenticeship Streams
This Certificate III in Horticulture (Retail Nursery) is offered as an apprenticeship to local students. The Certificate III in Horticulture (Retail Nursery) provides training in skills for working in a retail nursery. Underpinning these skills will be a sound knowledge of plant identification, merchandising, as well as pests and diseases, and their control. There is a strong emphasis on the development of practical skills, using the campus-based retail nursery located in Fairfield. NMIT also offers a non-industry full-time course to local and international students through the Horticulture Department.
Certificate III in Horticulture (Turf)
Learn to perform a broad range of tasks including irrigation installation, pest control and preparation of sports turf playing surfaces for sports including football, cricket or golf. Turf Management is a highly specialised profession for which our communities will always have a need. NMIT offers the Certificate III in Horticulture (Turf) as an apprenticeship to local students through the Horticulture Department.
Certificate III in Horticulture (Wholesale Nursery)
Apprenticeship
The Certificate III in Horticulture (Wholesale Nursery) is offered as an apprenticeship to local students through the Horticulture Department. This NMIT program provides training in the skills necessary for working in a wholesale nursery. Students will gain a good understanding of plant propagation, plant identification, pest and disease identification and control, as well as the other skills necessary to work in a wholesale nursery.
Certificate III in Hospitality (Commercial Cookery)
Food is a necessity of life, and people with skills in commercial cookery can work anywhere from the local pub to top international restaurants. Designed for applicants wanting skills to meet the demands of the culinary industry. All modules are nationally accredited.
Certificate III in Hospitality (Patisserie)
Designed for people employed as an apprentice pastry cook or those seeking a qualification in this field either full-time or part-time. Provides skills and knowledge for the speciality area of pastry in the culinary industry. All modules are nationally accredited.
Certificate III in Jewellery Manufacture
The Certificate III in Jewellery Manufacture is offered as an apprenticeship. Designed as a nationally accredited course for people wanting the Certificate III in Jewellery Manufacture from the Training Operations Bureau. The program features the Jewellery Centre, a professional jewellery school where master craftsmen and recognised experts pass on their knowledge.
Certificate III in Joinery
You will learn specialised joinery skills, as well as those common to the building and construction industry. These include: reading and interpreting plans; timber machining; and cutting and installing glass.
Certificate III in Locksmithing
Apprenticeship
This Certificate III in Locksmithing is offered as an apprenticeship to local students. Designed after extensive consultation with industry. Developed to provide extensive relevant training for apprentices in the locksmithing industries. NMIT also offers the Certificate III in Locksmithing to non-industry and international students through the Mechanical Manufacturing Department.
Certificate IV in Meat Processing
This course will advance your experience and skills applicable to more senior roles in the meat industry, and improve your knowledge of areas such as health, hygiene, safety and productivity. NMIT’s meat and fish processing facility at Epping offers industry-standard equipment such as a commercial scale boning room and sausage-making machines.
Certificate III in Meat Processing (Meat Retailing)
Butcher's Apprentice
The aim of the course is to provide knowledge and skills to people either employed or seeking employment in the Meat industry to become a butcher.
Certificate IV in Mental Health
The Certificate IV in Mental Health is taken in conjunction with the Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs to achieve a dual qualification. Certificate III in Painting and Decorating
If you enjoy working with your hands and using your flair to create interesting surfaces, painting and decorating may be the career choice for you. This course expands on your painting skills obtained from completing the Certificate II in Building and Construction (Painting and Decorating) or from on-the-job experiences, through a wide range of tasks and use of various materials for the painting industry.
Certificate III in Plumbing
To undertake the Certificate III in Plumbing applicants must be employed as an apprentice plumber. This course provides skills in working with pipes that carry water, sewage, gas and other industrial services, as well as roof and wall coverings, sanitary fixtures, gas appliances, heating and ventilation equipment, fire hydrant and sprinkler systems and urban irrigations systems. NMIT’s plumbing training facilities are recognised as a national industry benchmark.
Certificate III in Retail Baking - Combined
This course is designed to provide students with all the necessary skills to work as a baker in a retail or wholesale bakery, or a commercial kitchen. Learn to prepare and bake various types of bread, yeast-based products and artisan breads using different commercial machinery, as well as how to implement food and health safety policies and procedures.
Certificate III in Roof Tiling
This course has been designed to teach apprentices the latest in roof-tiling skills, through a wide range of tasks and use of various materials for the roof tiling industry. Areas of study include: mansard roof, construction techniques, roof openings and specialised roofing practices. Apprentices work at NMIT's specially designed facilities.
Certificate III in Shopfitting
Completing the Certificate III in Shopfitting at NMIT will give you a general introduction to the skills required to work in the building industry. It will also teach you specialised techniques in shopfitting. Some of the skills and knowledge you will learn include: timber machining, cutting and installing glass, aluminium fabrication, and computer aided drawings.
Certificate III in Switchgear and Controlgear
The Certificate III in Switchgear and Controlgear is offered as an apprenticeship. This qualification provides competencies to construction, assembly and wiring of switchboards and control panels.
Certificate III in Wall and Ceiling Lining
Apprenticeship
This Certificate III in Wall and Ceiling Lining is offered to local students as an apprenticeship. This course expands on yoru plastering skills obtained from completing the Certificate II in Building and Construction (Wall and Ceiling Lining) or from on-the-job experiences through a wide range of task and use of materials for the plastering industry. NMIT also offers the Certificate III in Wall and Ceiling Lining to non-industry and international students through the Building Structures and Services Department.
Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling
NMIT will give you the skills you need to complete an apprenticeship as a wall and floor tiler. Tilers lay tiles on internal and external walls and floors to provide finishes that are protective or decorative, or both. You will learn skills including: tiling decorative mosaics and installing marble floors.
Certificate III in Warehousing Operations
This course is designed to provide the necessary skills required for the warehousing industry. Graduates may be able to gain employment in logistics management, as well as operational roles in the transport, warehousing and storage industries.
Certificate III in Wool Clip Preparation
You can become an owner classer by doing this course. You will receive training in the preparation for and supervision of shearing operations. This includes: documenting a wool clip, and managing and supervising operations. NMIT has a 60 hectare working commercial farm, Northern Lodge, at Yan Yean, 25km north of Melbourne.
