The carpentry pre-apprenticeship is an intensive training program in NMIT’s purpose-built building barn at Heidelberg.

Successful completion of this course leads into an apprenticeship in:

Trainees undertaking an apprenticeship program are employed by carpenters and will train:

  • on-site with their employer
  • off-site at NMIT

Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building)

How to Start Your Own Building Business
This Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) has been designed to show you How to Start Your Own Building Business and prepare you for the Building Practitioners Board registration - an important first step towards allowing you to work in the building industry as a subcontractor. This course is is offered through the Building Structures and Services department. NMIT also offers a Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building), as well as a Builders Registration Course for the MBAV through the Design Drafting and Interior Fittings Department.

Certificate II in Building and Construction (Carpentry)

The Certificate II in Building and Construction is offered as a pre-apprenticeship to local students. NMIT will prepare you for a career in carpentry. You will learn skills and knowledge including: reading and interpreting plans; using hand and power tools; external cladding; and roofing.

Certificate III in Carpentry

Teaches carpentry skills. Areas of study include restricted height scaffolding , explosive power tools, timber wall framing, timber pitched roof-framing, sub floor framing, timber and sheet flooring and door frames. Career opportunities include carpenter, sub contractor and contractor. Trainees work at NMIT's specially designed facilities.

Certificate II in Construction Pathways

Run at our Heidelberg campus, the Certificate II in Construction Pathways offers pathways to NMIT's Carpentry, Joinery and Shopfitting and Building courses with direct credits on completion towards apprenticeship training in the Construction training package. An ideal combination of practical projects, hands-on experience and online assessments round out this course as the beginning to a career as an all round tradesman.

Basic Carpentry

Designed to kick-start basic carpentry skills. Develops competencies in working work with wood and creating projects. Learn the basic principles and practical skills of carpentry. Topics include correct use of hand and power tools, and marking and measuring and making small projects. Students must bring personal protective equipment.

Estimating Costing and Contracting for the Building Industry

Designed as a 'hands-on' course for the benefit of tradespeople wanting expertise in estimating, costing and contracting. Topics include: reading and costing a domestic dwelling plan; estimating techniques; costing; contracting mechanisms; providing specialised services; and study of all trades involved in domestic construction.

Furniture Making

Have you ever wanted to make your own furniture? Whether a beginner or equipped with some woodworking knowledge, NMIT’s Furniture Making short course is the perfect start point. Develop and practice woodwork skills to produce basic items of furniture. Use hand tools and some power tools.

Owner Builder Workshop

Designed for students wanting to become an owner builder. Topics include: organisation, regulatory compliance, finance, insurance, permits, site safety and design and energy considerations.
