Illustration is a form of commercial art that seeks to embellish and explain concepts presented in books, advertising, signage, posters, product packaging and promoting services.

Studying Illustration at NMIT, you will gain experience in book illustration, painting and printmaking, digital imaging, editorial illustration, freehand drawing and computer technologies. Advertising and promotion skills are also covered in our Illustration Certificate, Diploma and Degree programs, ideal for setting up your own business.

There are also opportunities to exhibit in NMIT’s galleries and develop your folio.

    Certificate IV in Design

    The Certificate IV is an entry level course for people who have a passion and flair for design. The course investigates creative areas such as product design, graphic design, illustration, digital imaging, animation, fashion design, web design, photography and painting.

    Diploma of Illustration

    Illustration is a diverse and growing field that gives you the opportunity to express your creativity while working and exploring traditional and new media technologies. You will learn fundamental skills for self promotion and how to set up your own business which includes developing a portfolio of work and exhibiting your work in one of our NMIT galleries and external private galleries.

    Associate Degree of Illustration

    Children's Book Illustration - Intermediate

    Children's books have entertained readers for centuries. This intermediate short course is designed to extend the skills and opportunities of people who have previously completed the Introduction to Children's Book Illustration course. The course explores development, book composition and text placement.

    Introduction to Children's Book Illustration

    This short course explores the art of creating images for different types of children’s picture books.You will explore skills including: basic drawing techniques, page composition, and storytelling through pictures. Topics include: picture book genres, using different media, and choosing subject matter.
