The building industry is booming and there is a lot of work available. So if you love to build things, why not apply for one of NMIT’s apprenticeship or pre-apprenticeship courses?

In these courses you will learn skills useful in all fields of building and construction.

In the pre-apprenticeship you will have an introduction to these three fields:

  • joinery
  • shopfitting
  • stair building

The pre-apprenticeship course gives you the best chance of gaining an apprenticeship in the industry. You can then do NMIT’s apprenticeship course and specialise in a particular area.

In the apprenticeship courses you can take your skills in joinery or shopfitting further.

Another option is to study Off-Site Construction, in which you can specialise in joinery, shopfitting or stairs.

The joinery course includes:

  • timber
  • aluminium
  • glass

These offsite streams allow you to develop skills in the specific industry to which you are apprenticed.

Learn the following skills and knowledge:

  • timber machining
  • door and window construction
  • showcase and cabinet construction
  • stair construction
  • partition construction and installation
  • occupational health and safety
  • cutting and installation of glass
  • levelling
  • measurements and calculations
  • using power and hand tools and other machinery
  • reading and interpreting plans

The training centre at NMIT’s Heidelberg campus has Victoria’s most technologically advanced facilities for building and construction.
