Physical security is essential for the wellbeing of our communities, and the locksmithing industry must constantly evolve to meet this demand with new products, technology and methods. NMIT’s courses in Locksmithing and physical security will equip you with the skills to develop a career as a generalist locksmith, or specialise in areas such as alarms, automotive or safes.

The Locksmithing Unit at NMIT offers courses in security technology and locksmithing including apprenticeship, diploma and specialist training packages. Other training services offered include intensive training for overseas locksmiths and short courses for industry and consultancy services. Short courses can be specifically designed for the client or may be selected from a number of off the shelf packages.

NMIT's Locksmithing Unit is dedicated to providing training for the locksmithing industry throughout Australia and overseas. The unit is located at the Heidelberg Campus.

Three primary courses service the needs of the locksmithing industry:

  • Certificate II in Engineering (Locksmithing)
  • Certificate III in Locksmithing (Apprenticeship)

Certificate II in Engineering

Locksmithing
This program comprises the Locksmithing stream for the Certificate II in Engineering. Prepares students for work in the locksmithing industry. Students who continue on to apprenticeship studies after completing the certificate II will have the relevant units credited to their apprenticeship. NMIT also offers other streams for the Certificate II in Engineering through the Mechanical Manufacturing Department.

Diploma of Engineering Technology

Security Engineering (Locksmithing)
This program comprises the Security Engineering (Locksmithing) stream of the Diploma of Engineering Technology. Provides you with extensive training in security technology. Areas of study include client relationships, power tools/hand held, key production, lock mechanisms, basic machining processes, basic fabrication techniques, automotive security systems, mechanical access control systems, security containers and mechanical security for buildings. NMIT also offers other streams of the Diploma of Engineering Technology through the Mechanical Manufacturing Department.

Certificate III in Locksmithing

Apprenticeship
This Certificate III in Locksmithing is offered as an apprenticeship to local students. Designed after extensive consultation with industry. Developed to provide extensive relevant training for apprentices in the locksmithing industries. NMIT also offers the Certificate III in Locksmithing to non-industry and international students through the Mechanical Manufacturing Department.
