If you enjoy working with your hands and using your creative flair to create interesting surfaces, NMIT’s painting and decorating courses will appeal to you. In these courses you will learn skills you can use across the building and construction industry and also specific skills in painting and decorating.
Painting and decorating includes certificate courses in both:
- pre-apprenticeship
- apprenticeship
The pre-apprenticeship course is studied off-site at NMIT’s purpose-built building barn on our Epping campus. Apprentices are employed by painters and train on-site with their employer and off-site at NMIT.

- using power and hand tools
- using small plant and equipment
- reading and interpreting plans
- preparing surfaces
- levelling

- painting by brush, roller and spray

Certificate II in Building and Construction (Painting and Decorating)
The Certificate II in Building and Construction (Painting and Decorating) is offered as a pre-apprenticeship to local students. This pre-apprenticeship course develops your skills through a wide range of tasks and use of various materials in the painting industry. You will learn skills across the building and construction industry as well as specific skills in painting and decorating.
Certificate III in Painting and Decorating
If you enjoy working with your hands and using your flair to create interesting surfaces, painting and decorating may be the career choice for you. This course expands on your painting skills obtained from completing the Certificate II in Building and Construction (Painting and Decorating) or from on-the-job experiences, through a wide range of tasks and use of various materials for the painting industry.
