Diploma of Visual Arts

Photography
Let your creativity snap through - NMIT’s Diploma of Visual Arts specialising in Photography builds on from the skills gained in the Certificate IV in Visual Arts. You will be encouraged to develop your own artistic style and concentrate on a portfolio for graduation in this mostly practical course. You will also gain a strong foundation in the visual arts, with practical studio subjects in drawing, printmaking, photography and digital media.

Basic Digital Camera

If you want to learn more about getting the best results from yhour digital camera, this introductory course will appeal to you. Topics include: compenents of a camera, viewfinders, resolution, recording mediums, white balancing, lenses, apertures, ISO/sensitivity, downloading images, shutters, exposure, practical photo shoots, image editing/Photoshop.

Traditional Black and White Darkroom Techniques

On completion of this six week workshop, you will have the knowledge and confidence to consistently produce high quality black and white prints in a traditional wet photographic dark room. Topics include: black and white film selection, filters in black and white photography, chemicals, health and safety, contact proofing, enlarging, dodging and burning, toning techniques, spotting and presentation.

Digital Painting in Photoshop

This course will help teach the technical skills required when using the painting tools in Adobe Photoshop to create simple but effective digital paintings and compositions. Participants will learn to render scanned outline drawing or create digital patinings from scratch completely in Adobe Photoshop. Topics include: introduction to the painting tools in Photoshop, vector versus bitmap, using the brush tool, selection techniques, layer techniques, adding textures, scanning line art, image output.

Mobile Phone Photography

Get the most out of your smart phone camera. Learn to use a range of phone applications (apps) to capture, enhance and edit photographs. Using social networks, you can further share images and promote your activities. Topics include: history of the media, how to correctly capture images, correct exposure and focusing, composition, storytelling and intent, street photography, image editing, social network sharing.

Photography Folio Preparation

The Photography Folio Preparation short course is for people wishing to improve their skills in digital photography. If you are looking at further study, this is an excellent opportunity to produce an impressive portfolio of prints/images for tertiary course entry. Topics include: components of a camera, image processing, asset management, printing, colour balance and levels adjustment, print presentation.

Photojournalism

This course provides a valuable insight into the media for both experienced photographers and beginners. Upon completion of the course, students can go on to further study or set up a freelance practice. For practising photographers who want a career change, this course provides an introduction to the techniques and approaches specific to the media. It is also suitable for those already working in the media who wish to add photography to their skill set.

Workplace Photoimaging

The Workplace Photoimaging course is suitable for those who are required to take pictures for their work and would like to improve their results. It provides introductory skills in quality photographic images for a variety of industries, including advertising, public relations, portraiture, documentation (insurance, evidence and manufacturing) and other vocational applications.
