Do you like hands-on work? Would you like to work in the building and construction industry, specialising in internal work? Would you like to create ornamental objects for homes and other buildings? If so, the plastering courses at NMIT are for you.
Fibrous plasterers make and install plaster internal linings of various buildings, including:
- domestic
- commercial
- industrial
The linings are for both walls and ceilings. The work involves making fixing plaster sheets and cornices and fixing them to timber and metal framing. Plasterers also manufacture and fix ornamental plasterwork.
The courses NMIT offers include:
- pre-apprenticeship
- apprenticeship
The pre-apprenticeship course is studied off-site at NMIT, while apprentices work on-site with qualified plasterers plus selected periods of on-site training at NMIT.
In these courses you will also learn general building industry skills, as well as skills specific to plastering.

- using hand and power tools
- first aid
- plastering construction techniques
- occupational health and safety
- levelling and scaffolding
- reading building plans
- demolition work
- operating elevated work platforms

Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building)
How to Start Your Own Building Business
This Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) has been designed to show you How to Start Your Own Building Business and prepare you for the Building Practitioners Board registration - an important first step towards allowing you to work in the building industry as a subcontractor. This course is is offered through the Building Structures and Services department. NMIT also offers a Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building), as well as a Builders Registration Course for the MBAV through the Design Drafting and Interior Fittings Department.
Certificate II in Building and Construction (Wall and Ceiling Lining)
The Certificate II in Building and Construction (Wall and Ceiling Lining) is offered as a pre-apprenticeship to local students. This pre-apprenticeship course develops your skills through a wide range of tasks and use of various materials for the plastering industry. NMIT’s Epping campus has one of Victoria’s most technologically advanced facilities for building and construction.
Certificate III in Wall and Ceiling Lining
Apprenticeship
This Certificate III in Wall and Ceiling Lining is offered to local students as an apprenticeship. This course expands on yoru plastering skills obtained from completing the Certificate II in Building and Construction (Wall and Ceiling Lining) or from on-the-job experiences through a wide range of task and use of materials for the plastering industry.
