Plumbing and gasfitting is a varied career involving many different areas, including installing and maintaining:

- pre-apprenticeship
- apprenticeship
The pre-apprenticeship courses are off-site at NMIT and include instruction in other areas of building and construction. The apprenticeships involve working on-site with a qualified plumber and periods of on-site training at NMIT.
Once you have completed your qualifications, you will have the choice of working for an employer or setting up your own small business.

The plumbing training facilities in the Manufacturing, Engineering and Building Industry Training Centre at NMIT’s Heidelberg Campus are recognised as a national industry benchmark. They include a plumbing sandpit, simulated house stations and an advanced gas training laboratory.

Certificate III in Plumbing
To undertake the Certificate III in Plumbing applicants must be employed as an apprentice plumber. This course provides skills in working with pipes that carry water, sewage, gas and other industrial services, as well as roof and wall coverings, sanitary fixtures, gas appliances, heating and ventilation equipment, fire hydrant and sprinkler systems and urban irrigations systems. NMIT’s plumbing training facilities are recognised as a national industry benchmark.
Certificate IV in Plumbing
This course has been designed to teach the skills required of a licensed plumber in the plumbing services industry. Competencies are aligned to areas required towards gaining a Plumbing Industry Commission Licence.
Certificate II in Plumbing (Pre-apprenticeship)
This pre-vocational course develops your skills through a wide range of tasks and use of various materials for the plumbing industry, such as sheet metal practices and levelling. This course will prepare graduates with the skills and knowledge for entry level into an apprenticeship within the plumbing industry. Converting A Type Gas Appliances
Designed as a specialist course for plumbers in the art of Converting ‘A’ Type Gas Appliances. Topics include correct conversion of 'A' type appliances from one gas type to another; recognising components within 'A' type appliances; and upgrading to the correct installation procedure.
Gas Refresher Course
Designed to help students meet the requirements of the Plumbing Registration Board for plumbers and gasfitters to undergo skills assessment in gas fitting. Topics include use of manometers and gas fitting safety, commissioning and associated regulations.
