Pre-apprenticeships are a great way to find out what it’s like to work in a particular industry without committing to a formal apprenticeship.
Pre-apprenticeships are available to secondary students, school leavers and mature age students – you just need to be at least 15 before you can enrol in a pre-apprenticeship.
An NMIT pre-apprenticeship will provide you with the best preparation for a formal apprenticeship and NMIT can help you find an employer when you have finished your course.

Certificate II in Agriculture
Beef and Sheep
NMIT offers the Certificate II in Agriculture as a general introduction to agriculture techniques, but also allows you to specialise in an area such as sheep and wool production or beef production. NMIT’s excellent facilities include the 600 ha working commercial farm, Northern Lodge, at Yan Yean (25 km north of Melbourne).
Certificate II in Bicycles
Designed to allow students to work as a bicycle mechanic within a retail environment or equivalent. Teaches servicing and minor repairs of bikes, including servicing of wheel hubs, mechanical and hydraulic braking systems, steering, suspension and drive train systems. Removing, fitting and minor repairs to tyres, wheels and fitting of accessories may be included.
Certificate II in Building and Construction (Bricklaying)
The Certificate II in Building and Construction (Bricklaying) is offered as a pre-apprenticeship to local students. NMIT will give you a great preparation for a career in bricklaying. You will learn skills and knowledge such as: reading and interpreting plans; levelling and scaffolding; using hand and power tools; veneer construction; using small plant and equipment; and masonry blockwork.
Certificate II in Building and Construction (Carpentry)
The Certificate II in Building and Construction is offered as a pre-apprenticeship to local students. NMIT will prepare you for a career in carpentry. You will learn skills and knowledge including: reading and interpreting plans; using hand and power tools; external cladding; and roofing.
Certificate II in Building and Construction (Painting and Decorating)
The Certificate II in Building and Construction (Painting and Decorating) is offered as a pre-apprenticeship to local students. This pre-apprenticeship course develops your skills through a wide range of tasks and use of various materials in the painting industry. You will learn skills across the building and construction industry asa well as specific skills in painting and decorating.
Certificate II in Building and Construction (Wall and Ceiling Lining)
The Certificate II in Building and Construction (Wall and Ceiling Lining) is offered as a pre-apprenticeship to local students. This pre-apprenticeship course develops your skills through a wide range of tasks and use of various materials for the plastering industry. NMIT’s Epping campus has one of Victoria’s most technologically advanced facilities for building and construction.
Certificate II in Building and Construction (Wall and Floor Tiling)
The Certificate II in Building and Construction (Wall and Floor Tiling) is offered as a pre-apprenticeship to local students through the Building Structures and Services Department. You will get the skills you need to work as a wall and floor tiler. Tilers lay tiles on internal and external walls and floors to provide finishes that are protective or decorative, or both. You will learn skills including: use of plant and power tools; preparing surfaces and laying tiles; and concreting.
Certificate II in Construction Pathways
Run at our Heidelberg campus, the Certificate II in Construction Pathways offers pathways to NMIT's Carpentry, Joinery and Shopfitting and Building courses with direct credits on completion towards apprenticeship training in the Construction training package. An ideal combination of practical projects, hands-on experience and online assessments round out this course as the beginning to a career as an all round tradesman.
Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Pre-Vocational)
Provides exposure to the various trades which come under the electrical industry umbrella. Provides an understanding of the electrical trades industry terminology, basic circuitry and colour coding. NMIT’s Faculty of Engineering has been approved by Energysafe Victoria (State Electrical Regulator) to develop and conduct assessments under their auspice for the electrical fitting industry.
Certificate II in Engineering
Fabrication
This program comprises the Fabrication stream of the Certificate II in Engineering. Enhances the skills of people working in the metal trades. Areas of study include welding, mechanical cutting, manual heating, thermal cutting and gouging, technical drawing, manual handling, engineering measurements quality procedures, and power/hand tools. NMIT also offers other streams for the Certificate II in Engineering through the Mechanical Manufacturing Department.

Locksmithing
This program comprises the Locksmithing stream for the Certificate II in Engineering. Prepares students for work in the locksmithing industry. Students who continue on to apprenticeship studies after completing the certificate II will have the relevant units credited to their apprenticeship. NMIT also offers other streams for the Certificate II in Engineering through the Mechanical Manufacturing Department.

Mechanical
This program comprises the Mechanical stream for the Certificate II in Engineering. Provides pre-employment training in the engineering industry. Accommodates entry into the wider manufacturing industry. The program is represented on State/National education and industry committees/networks. NMIT also offers other streams of the Certificate II in Engineering through the Mechanical Manufacturing Department.
Certificate II in Engineering Studies
Provides pre-employment training and pathways into apprenticeships and traineeships in the engineering industry. Accommodates entry into the wider manufacturing industry.
Certificate II in Floristry
If you have a love of flowers and artistic flare then a career in floristry might be for you. Gain a sound basis in practical floristry skills applicable to tasks ranging from plant identification and stock display, to retail and customer service.
Certificate II in Furniture Making
This pre-vocational course offers students the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required for entry in to an apprenticeship in the furnishing industry via multiple pathways, including 'free standing' furniture making and 'in-built' furniture making/installation (kitchens and bathrooms).
Certificate II in Hairdressing
Want to make the most of your creativity in the hairdressing industry? NMIT’s Certificate II in Hairdressing is a pre-vocational course that introduces you to the fast-paced world of hairdressing, and is perfect for school leavers interested in discovering what the industry is all about. Learning takes place in NMIT’s cutting-edge hairdressing training studios, which are fitted with all the latest equipment.
Certificate II in Horticulture
The Certificate II in Horticulture is a six month pre-apprenticeship program designed to help you decide which area of horticulture is right for you. Gain introductory knowledge and skills in landscaping, nursery, parks and gardens, turf and revegetation. The qualification also provides a sound foundation for progression into other horticulture training levels such as the Certificate III.
Certificate II in Horticulture (Landscape)
Designed as a pre-apprenticeship training program, the Certificate II is suitable for anyone who wants to gain the basic skills and knowledge to assist with finding employment in the industry and/or before moving into a horticultural landscape apprenticeship. The six month course incorporates a work experience component that give students real workplace experience in the landscape industry.
Certificate II in Horticulture (Turf)
Develop skills required for the establishment and maintenance of recreational turf surfaces. Learn to perform a broad range of tasks including how to operate turf machinery and ride-on vehicles, or prepare turf surfaces for play. Turf management is a highly specialised profession for which our communities will always have a need.
Certificate I in Hospitality (Kitchen Operations)
Hospitality Department
This Certificate I in Hospitality (Kitchen Operations) is offered through the Hospitality Department. This pre-apprenticeship course is suitable for people seeking employment in a commercial kitchen and/or an apprenticeship in the Hospitality industry. Learn to perform a range of tasks for the hospitality industry, such as how to prepare and present food, or maintain kitchen premises. NMIT also offers the Certificate I in Hospitality (Kitchen Operations) through the Work Education Centre.
Certificate II in Meat Processing
At NMIT’s meat and fish processing facility at Epping, you will gain such skills as basic knifework, food preparation and handling, packaging and quality assurance. If you are seeking employment in the industry, or already work as an assistant in a meat retailing enterprise, this course will further your practical skills and knowledge.
Certificate II in Plumbing (Pre-apprenticeship)
This pre-vocational course develops your skills through a wide range of tasks and use of various materials for the plumbing industry, such as sheet metal practices and levelling. This course will prepare graduates with the skills and knowledge for entry level into an apprenticeship within the plumbing industry. Gain the hands-on experience needed to start your career in plumbing today.
Certificate II in Retail Make-Up and Skin Care
This qualification reflects the role of individuals who are competent in communicating in the workplace, interacting with customers, demonstrating and selling make-up and retail skin care products, and performing routine salon or store functions.
