Do you like working outdoors and are good with heights? Have you considered a career as a roof tiler and slater?

Roof tiling is an unusual and specialised position in the building and construction industry. Roof tilers and slaters work with many different types of roofs and with varying materials. Each of these materials require different construction techniques.

These include:

  • Mansard and Cape Cod roofs
  • gable and hip roofs
  • hip and valley roof combinations
  • other irregular types of roofs

In these courses you will receive a full introduction to roofing and tiling techniques and their relationship to other parts of the building process.

Apprentices are employed by roof tilers. As part of the course, you will train both:

  • on-site with your employer
  • off-site at NMIT

At NMIT’s Epping campus building barn, you will have the opportunity to try out many of these different techniques.

Once you have completed your qualifications, you will have the choice of working for an employer or setting up your own small business.

Other skills and knowledge you will learn:

  • working on facades
  • using equipment for roofing and tiling
  • roof openings
  • specialised roof practices
  • occupational health and safety

The training centre at NMIT’s Epping campus has Victoria’s most technologically advanced facilities for building and construction.
