NMIT provides a range of sustainability courses and training at the forefront of industry trends.
Every home will eventually be required to conform to some energy efficiency criteria. Sustainability represents a real growth area in industry and NMIT can help people get skilled up in a variety of ways.
At the most basic level, people will need:
- advice on what they can do as individuals
- to be informed so as not to be ripped-off by unscrupulous installers etc
- to know what is the best solution for their needs and financial position
- to know how to do an energy audit of their own homes and how they can use energy more efficiently
- to know about carbon trading and cost saving
At an advanced level, in business and enterprise, people will need skills in:

Bachelor of Accounting
This course has been developed to meet the growing demand for business professionals with qualifications in the areas of accounting and sustainable business. It is ideal for those wishing to combine a mainstream accounting course with a sustainability and environmental management focus. The course includes traditional Accounting subjects covering General Accounting, Corporate Accounting, Management Accounting, Auditing and Taxation and Financial Management whilst at the same time providing a focus on environmental sustainability through subjects such as Introduction to Sustainability Studies, Environmental Law and Environmental Economics and Policy. Students who successfully complete an Associate Degree of Accounting are eligible to be accepted directly into the Bachelor of Accounting.
Diploma of Agronomy
Be at the forefront of farming knowledge. With NMIT’s Diploma of Agronomy, you’ll gain specialised, professional level skills and knowledge that can be applied on farms to guide decisions about crops, pasture, and chemical and fertiliser application.
Certificate IV in Landscape Design

This course is designed to develop or enhance your skills to create the designs that will make sure that you will win that next job, and future jobs due to the professional standard of your plans. The public is always after a clear and easily understandable plan to make a decision about their landscaping needs.
Diploma of Building and Construction (Building)
Managing your building career - you’ve got the hands-on experience; now take your career to the next level - manage a commercial or domestic building site with your leadership expertise in the building and construction industry.
Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural)
Rise up in the world of design - turn your dream of working for an Architect, Building Designer or running your own Building Design firm into reality. A career in Building Design can be both creative and rewarding. This course will equip you with knowledge and skills to accomplish design, presentation and the documentation process for residential and commercial building projects.
Certificate III in Conservation and Land Management
If you care about environmental issues and the conservation of our natural resources, this course will develop your knowledge of bushland regeneration and revegetation. You will learn skills including how to apply approaches to restoration, conservation and management of natural areas, parks and reserves. You will also be able to undertake an Australian apprenticeship for this course.
Diploma of Conservation and Land Management
If you are engaged in the work of conservation and land management, this course has a focus on advancing your skills through on-the-ground experience, including field trips. In an era of global warming, improve your ability to protect and preserve our natural world.
Advanced Diploma of Engineering Design

Certificate IV in Home Sustainability Assessment
Students of the Certificate IV in Home Sustainability Assessment will learn to assess household energy and water use, assess household thermal performance and waste generation, develop environmentally sustainable and safe work practices, assist residents to cost and adopt home sustainability practices, develop professionally and ethically as a home sustainability assessor. Intakes may be available for Semester 2. Please contact the department for the latest enrolment information.
Diploma of Interior Design and Decoration
Use your current interior design skills to catapult you into the world of commercial interior design – work for large corporate clients and prestigious customers to unleash your creative flair into their world.
Certificate III in Lands Parks and Wildlife
This entry-level course provides you with the knowledge and skills required to commence a career in the bush regeneration/revegetation and the management of natural areas, parks and reserves.
Diploma of Ornamental Horticulture
Expand and grow in your industry - your knowledge of ‘plantmanship’ through study, practical use and community engagement will see you succeed in the Diploma of Ornamental Horticulture. This course has been designed to allow industry to seek appropriate people with specialist skills in the horticulture field. You will be able to advise people of plants that can be grown in certain areas, situations and climates, and suggest plants that can be used in place of a particular plant, that will give the same effect or appearance.
Diploma of Sustainability
The increasing human demands being made globally on natural resources is driving the need to manage their use in a way that will sustain these resources for future generations. Understanding the concept and principles of sustainability is essential to change behaviour and practices. The Diploma of Sustainability provides an opportunity to gain the tools required to be involved in the development of a sustainable society. These skills are in increasing demand by many industries. The Diploma of Sustainability can be completed in conjunction with another diploma qualification or higher to achieve a dual qualification.

Grid Connect Design
Completion provides skills and knowledge to plan and design solar systems to be connected to the power grid. Requires prior learning/pre-requisites. Topics include technical standards, regulations and codes; electricity distributors and supply requirements; electrical metering arrangements; occupational Health and Safety principles; electrical safe working practices; and grid connected inverters. This course provides credit for the national unit of competency UEENEEK305C Grid Connect Design.
Grid Connect Install for Qualified Electricians
Designed to give qualified, licensed electricians the skills and knowledge to safely plan, configure and install alternative power sources to the power grid. Topics include occupational Health and Safety principles; electrical safe working practice; photovoltaic power systems and grid connected inverters.
