Past graduates have gone on to be successful exhibiting artists. Visual Arts has two permanent galleries, at Preston and Fairfield, and students exhibit throughout the year. You will also have external industry exhibitions at the end of your second year.

Advanced Diploma of Creative Product Development
The Advanced Diploma of Creative Product Development provides students with the opportunity to extend their knowledge gained at a previous diploma level qualification in the creative arts, design or photography fields. It is an extension of the knowledge and skills already acquired in the chosen creative discipline and builds on these in line with industry practice.
Certificate IV in Design
The Certificate IV is an entry level course for people who have a passion and flair for design. The course investigates creative areas such as product design, graphic design, illustration, digital imaging, animation, fashion design, web design, photography and painting.
Diploma of Graphic Design
NMIT’s Diploma of Graphic Design will give you the skills you need to work as a graphic designer. It will give students the opportunity to develop their design skills to a highly proficient and professional level. The areas covered include: computer-based graphic design and web media software; print and online production technology; and traditional design, typography and graphic design skills. You can exhibit your work in NMIT’s galleries.
Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design
The course gives innovative students the opportunity to develop their design skills to a highly proficient and professional level. It demands the development of a range of skills encompassing both contemporary technologies and traditional design processes, recognising that both are necessary for employment in the graphic design industry.

Painting and Printmaking
This program comprises the Painting and Printmaking stream of the Diploma of Visual Art. We will prepare you to work as a freelance artist, learning skills including: arts business, preparing work for exhibition, and research and critical analysis. Visual Arts has two permanent galleries, at Preston and Fairfield, where you can exhibit your work. Past graduates have gone on to successful exhibiting artists. NMIT also offers the Photomedia and Printmaking stream of the Diploma of Visual Art through the Visual Art Department.

Photomedia and Printmaking
This program comprises the Photomedia and Printmaking stream of the Diploma of Visual Art. We will prepare you to work as a freelance artist. You will learn advanced drawing, photography and printmaking techniques. Skills learnt include: arts business, image manipulation, and research and analysis. NMIT’s studios and galleries allow you to develop and exhibit your work. Our photography courses have won several national professional industry awards. NMIT also offers the Painting and Printmaking stream of the Diploma of Visual Art through the Visual Arts Department.

Advanced Screen Printing for Artists
This program extends the skills of people who have completed the Introduction to Screen Printing for Artists course. Building on the knowledge introduced in the earlier course, participants will learn how to combine and evaluate a more advanced range of techniques to create highly personal studio work in art, design and illustration fields.
Art and Design - Folio Preparation
If you want to develop a folio to apply for further study, NMIT’s Visual Arts department has the ideal course. The areas of study are: drawing/illustration, design appreciation, graphic design and digital graphics. You will get a balance of traditional studio-based and computer-generated work in NMIT’s new Mac Lab at our Fairfield campus.
Children's Book Illustration - Intermediate
Children's books have entertained readers for centuries. This intermediate short course is designed to extend the skills and opportunities of people who have previously completed the Introduction to Children's Book Illustration course. The course explores development, book composition and text placement.
Introduction to Children's Book Illustration
This short course explores the art of creating images for different types of children’s picture books.You will explore skills including: basic drawing techniques, page composition, and storytelling through pictures. Topics include: picture book genres, using different media, and choosing subject matter.
Introduction to Screen Printing for Artists
Screen printing is an exciting area that includes printmaking, T-shirt design and poster art. Using non-toxic materials, you will learn a range of technical skills in: hand drawn and cut stencils, photo emulsion stencils and ink types. You will also learn simple printing methods using paper, fabric and other media.
Introduction to Drawing - Folio Preparation
Get a great introduction to basic technical and conceptual drawing skills. You can explore a range of drawing techniques. You will also work with several different media, including: ink, pen, charcoal, pastel and pencil. Course work includes a series of exercises designed to develop both observational and analytical skills.
Introduction to Printmaking
This six-week certificate course is designed to develop basic skills in printmaking. Gain confidence through practice and feedback from our expert staff. Use several different techniques, including relief and intaglio. Learn about contemporary and traditional print conventions, and how to select and use appropriate materials and techniques.
