NMIT's Young Adult Migrant Education Course (YAMEC) is offered through the Youth Unit. Classes are designed for migrant and refugee young adults from 15-26 years of age who have not completed secondary schooling and/or who need to develop further English language and literacy skills.

Students are supported to overcome barriers to engagement in education through elements of the curriculum, connection with community agencies and pathway planning with their Managed Individual Pathways (MIP) worker.

YAMEC is the first step on an educational and vocational pathway into mainstream education, training and employment. Advanced classes undertake the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) together with ESL and vocational subjects.

Some of the career preparation options and/or employment fields available are:

  • entry into pre-apprenticeships
  • apprenticeships
